they require several years of experience..where the heck are we supposed to get that experience from if no one will hire us? i'm graduating in may and i have no clue what to do with myself. i don't want to sit at a desk all day. all the jobs i'd love to do require 5-10 years of experience. any suggestions?

Sadly, that's the way it works. First they want a meaningless piece of paper (degree), then they want experience which you cannot obtain unless you already have experience. I suggest... 1) Internships. Just don't give up and go into despair or any of that silly stuff... that won't help. -Warik ------------------ BY THE POWER OF GRAYSKULL!!!

djane, Check this out: You are looking for the ideal job. They want the ideal candidate. There's going to be concessions on both sides to reach agreement.

my problem right now is that i'm really not even sure what i want to do. i will have a liberal arts degree with minors in english and anthropology. i don't want to go into law, or medical field, or teach, or be a cop, which is what my neighbor wants me to do cause he could get me on easily. and i'm not good with computers. basically in today's market, i think i'm pretty useless. I want to go to the peace corps, and travel, and study, and write. what kind of a job can i find that i would enjoy?

What's stopping you from joining Peace Corps? If that's what you want to do, go for it.

MB diesn't like the idea too much b/c they pay so little, and he HAS to watch his football. i for one don't mind the idea of living in a very poor area, and helping in any way i can. i know it will not be a glamorous job but i really want to try. i sent off for the application so it should be here soon. they also can't guarantee placement of couples unless they're married, so even if we both got in, we wouldn't necessarliy be working together or even in the same country.

Well, djane, you may be too close to graduation for this to work for you, but to everyone in college, my advise: Internships! We have co-ops all over this place making good money. They work one semester, then go to school one semester. When they graduate, they're almost guaranteed a good job. But its hard to land an internship after your junior year. The company wants you to work at least 2 years (so they can get 4 semesters from you) before you graduate. They figure they're making an investment in you. Maybe you could tell them you're going to graduate school.

i did talk to National Geographic yesterday and they said the same thing. they give internships for college students but i wouldn't count b/c i'm graduating in May. that sucks! they said i should call back in April and send in a resume anyway but for every job they put out, they have 200 people apply for it, and most have had 5-10 years of EXPERIENCE. i'll do it anyway i guess. shit, i'll wash someone's clothes in a third world country if they'll let me work for them.

You have to do stuff that you *don't* love for a while, while you get the experience and work your way up. These days, actually working hard and paying your dues and working your way up seem like old-fashioned, quaint concepts, but that is the way it still generally works.

PS: I was had a useless major. After a couple of turns in the road(which I do not regret), I just chose a career I thought I would like, started at rock bottom, and worked my way up. Granted, some careers do require very specific education and training, but don't think of yourself as useless. You would be surprised at the number of very successful art majors, english majors, etc. who are now very very successful in almost every field. Just work hard, try different things, and enjoy life while you are young. By the way, the peace corps idea sounds like a good one for you now.

Lot's of people work in the techo industry without being programmers. With an english degree you can make good money writing/editing technical documentation, user manuals. And they don't expect you to know the product to start. The Technical testing departments are full of newbies. Often the way a tech manual gets reviewed is to throw it at a non-tech english editor and see if they can learn/use the product by reading the manual. These jobs are sometimes found under the heading "Quality controls"

thanks for all the advice guys and gals. a good friend of mine suggested Epidemiology and i'd never even heard of it, but after looking into it, it seems like i would be able to travel, help people, and feel useful all in one! for those that don't know what that is, i would go into an area that has just experienced some sort of epidemic and asses the area and people so the government can come in and help. keep the ideas coming though, and thanks again!
