I recently installed a CD rewriter on my brother's computer. He's got a Compaq, running Windows 98 and it also has a DVD and Zip drive. Here's the problem. Whenever I place a CD into either the DVD or the rewriter, the computer reboots as soon as the CD starts being read. If I put the CD into the DVD, after the computer tries to reboot, I get a blue screen before Windows finishes loading. If I put the CD into the rewriter, Windows loads normally. The techs at Acer (the rewriter manufacturer) had me go to the device manager panel and look at the hard disk controller. It listed "Intel 80801 Ultra ATA", or something to that effect. What the techs told me is that the computer runs at "Ultra 100" and that all Acer rewriters run at "Ultra 33" and to contact Compaq to see if I can change the computer to Ultra 33. Does this make sense? If so, exactly what does it mean? I think this is an IRQ conflict issue, but even if I'm correct, I don't know how to fix it. Does anyone have any ideas on how I might be able to fix this problem? Thanks | ||

ATA 100 is backward compatible with ATA 33. I dont think thats your prob you said it reboots itself? You might have a power problem maybe the power supply cant handle the extra loadits proly a 235 watt or less. Its really to hard to say whats wrong. I would clean up the device manager and re seat everything. And look for a bios flash for the CDR . Too hard to say without being there |
