Man there are some nights when I find it absolutely impossible to get to sleep...I think it might have something to do with trying to sleep when you are depressed and thinking about a million things at a time

yes.

lol@havoc!

Actually, I think this problem is quite common. When something is bothering you or you have a major life decision to make, it's hard to fall asleep you just lie there thinking about the things that are bothering you and then are tired and lethargic during the day. Personally, if your problems are getting so bad that they interrupt your natural sleep patterns, I would recommend talking to someone about them (psychiatrist, therapist, counselor, spiritual advisor (eg, priest), etc). The sleep loss is only a symptom of a larger underlying problem.

Also, I'd make sure that you're practicing good sleep hygiene:
1. No caffiene
2. No smoking
3. No alcohol
4. No naps
5. Give yourself some time to unwind before you go to bed. Take a bath, watch TV, read - anything that will help you relax.
6. Don't use your bed for anything but sleep (sex is ok, too!). Don't watch TV or eat in bed. You want to train your body that going to bed means going to sleep.

If none of that helps, you can try taking sedatives, too, but be careful because many prescription sedatives like valium and temazapan can be highly addictive.

good luck!

I have the same situation at times. Try to keep a regular bedtime and don't load up on carbos before bed. It can affect your ablility to sleep.

I can't sleep some nights too. Then they'll be nights were I sleep like 30 mins, wake up and can't fall asleep for a few hours, and I repeat this process all night.

Anyone ever try Melatonin? I have heard good and bad about it, but its worked for me. Plus you don't get that tired feeling the next day like some other stuff will cause.

I working rotating shifts including shift work. I take a couple of gravol when I can't sleep and find this helps. Had my doctor okay this as well. He says there are no addictive qualities in it. Neo-citron does me wonders as well.

latona-you can get them in any drug store. Hell- you can get them in in the corner store/Walmart..wherever. Gravol is a name brand and it's just a motion sickness/nausea pill. (Dimenhydrinate) It just makes most people sleepy. Neo-citron is a cold medication-a powder you mix with hot water and drink. I just find both are cheap and safe ways to help me sleep when needed.
