Are you asking our opinion or what is generally considered to be the answer??? As far as the Bible is concerned, different sources give different answers. You named the main three. (The sex part being wrong because it was homosexual, according to many) ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Scratch that(my original answer)---I just asked my friend and was told it was greed and arrogence. [This message has been edited by Engine9 (edited February 04, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

If I remember correctly, there was a selective door policy in effect at Lot's orgy, and, the angels, denied entrance, turned into a couple of bitter queens and burned the place down. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Well I'm wondering if anyone has insight on the "let us KNOW them" phrase .. if I was reading that I wouldn't think it had anything to do with sex .. but I don't know hebrew. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'm pretty sure that English translators of the OT used the word "know" quite a bit to mean "fuck." ![]() ![]() ![]()

I don't know if this is what you guys are looking for, but the Sin of Sodom goes back to an old Bible story with the city of Sodom & Gamorea. It was said that the people of the city of Sodom & Gamorea sort of turned their back on God and started doing all sorts of terrible things including orgys and same sex relationships, false gods ect. Well as the story goes there was only one man left in the city that had not turned his back on god and god told him to gather his family and leave the city because it was going to be destroyed. So eventually the man and his family left the city. The catch was that as they left the city they were to not look back at all. As they left the city god started destroying it and the mans wife looked back at the city and turned into a pillar of salt, and that was the end of the city, don't quote me on all of that but I think that is how the story went. But anyways it is also said that thats where the term sodomize or sodomy came from. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

The weird thing is, I was watching a documentary a while ago on the Red sea and it went into the area where Sodom and Gomorra was supposedly. There were volcanic rock formations that had struck the ground like fireballs (fire and brimstone?) and piles of salt deposit in the mountains (Lot's wife?) that could not be explained. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

we see a sexual theme to the story because of a semi oral tradition, but does the text actually say anything to do with sex? and the salt deposits are quite explainable in terms of condensation and evaporation. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yeah, if the salt was evenly distributed. The Red sea is full of it but these were piled high and isolated. The programme was also about the areas geology and the experts on it could not explain them fully although they had some unsubstantiated theories. The story has nothing to do with homosexuality as we know it today. Notice that when the men of the city ask for the angels to be handed over Lot offers his virgin daughters instead. Now why would he offer his daughters if he knew the mob was wanting homo sex. The ancient world was hostile and full of bandits. There were no Motel 6's. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I take it Johnny that this is one of trademarked rhetorical questions, intended to get us to wonder how much the Bible really says about homosexuality. And though I'm sure that there is room for argument regarding the interpretation of passenges traditionally interpreted to be prohibitions on same-sex relationships, it's pretty clear that the New Testament prohibits fornication, at the very least, which covers all homosexuality. Although I respect other people's religious beliefs, I personally think attempts to reconcile homosexuality and interpretations of the Bible as a rule book -- a pet hobby of gay Texans I've noticed -- are bizarre and strained. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hi Johnny, I think the line you are referring to is Gen 19:5. You asked about the Hebrew. It is Vayikru el-Lot va'yomru lo: ayeh ha-anashim asher-ba'u elecha ha-kayla hozi'aim aylaynu v'nayda otam. which translates pretty literally "And they cried out to Lot saying: "Where are the men who cam with you tonight? Bring them ot to us, that we will KNOW [v'nayda] them." As a rule, the verb root daleth-ayen ['to know'] refers to sexual relationsin Biblical Hebrew if it cannot explicitIy mean 'to know a particular fact'. It is generally accepted among Jewish Biblical commentators that this particular line refers to homosexual rape (cf. Judg. 19:22). Rape because the sex is compounded by aggression. This is the opinion of Rashi (10th cent.) and Maimonades(12th cent). HOWEVER, a rabinnic interpretation found in Tosefa Sotah 3:11f and in the writings of Nachmanades( aka Ramban), a 13th century thinker, along with others, suggests that the affluent people of Sodom selfishly adopted a deliberate policy of maltreating strangers in order to discourage visitors to the city and thus not have to share their prosperity with others. Ramban's commentary on this line quotes a line from the Talmud (4-6th century) quoting Ezekiel (16:19): Behold, this as the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride fullness of bread and careless ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. Ramban continues that this "really means that they continued provoking and rebelling against Him with their ease and oppression of the poor." In general, though, rabbinic opinion holds that they practices every form of evil. The sin of Sodom is considered a general heinous moral and social corruption, an arrogant disregard of human rights, and a cynical insensitivity to the suffering of others. Jeremaih identifies this with adultery, false dealing and the encouragement of evildoers -- all without feelings of contrition (Jerem. 23:14) I'm not a religiously observant person, so this isn't a big issue for me. But I think it is interesting that there is no consensus on this issue among those who are both more learned and more religious than I am. I hope this is interesting for someone else too.... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
