Particularly the leadership and readiness. That in an effort to get leaner, they have too few active personnel running too many missions, for longer periods of time -- that a much higher percentage are leaving than staying and that the National Guard (weekend warriors) are starting to be called on for active duty more and more often for extended periods of time. I've been considering the idea of joining an LRS National Guard unit (enlisted) or National Guard MI or MP unit as an officer -- I've been offered all of the abovementioned by the recruiter (LRS doesn't have any officer slots available). He's also offered me a journalism officer slot... I want to do it, but I don't want to get myself into a bad thing. I'm 28, married, have 2 kids, a house, 2 cars, make good money etc., I wouldn't be doing this for the money or because I need to, I'd be doing it for the experience of doing it. Any advice from some of the guys in the Army (or other branches) that are familiar? ------------------ Copyright 2001 TheMachine Company, Inc. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Stay out of the guard period. I did it and it was a waste. Join the Marine Reserve if you must. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Big Buck, I was going LRS because it is an Airborne unit. I know Marines have Airborne units too, but I'm not a big fan of the water... ------------------ Copyright 2001 TheMachine Company, Inc. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

quote: Machine, we're not the navy. The only way you'll be on water if you're deployed w/ a MEU or something like that. If you're a reservist, that's VERY, VERY, VERY unlikely. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

quote: I know you're not the NAVY -- lol! It was my understanding that much of Marine training (basic, etc.) was water-based though... is that inaccurate? ------------------ Copyright 2001 TheMachine Company, Inc. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yes, that's inaccurate. U have one "swim week" in bootcamp. U have to qualify as a CWS-4. There's 5 basic levels: (easist to hardest) CWS-4, CWS-3, CWS-2, CWS-1, and WSQ. It's not that hard. U have to do things like tread water, swim w/ full gear on, shit like that. If u advance to of the higher levels, shit becomes ALOT harder. People will try and choke u underwater and u have to get out of the hold and good shit like that. BTW, I'm WSQ in swim. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

They are highly undisciplened, brain dead fucks who wouldn't know there rifle from their ass. If you want to get killed then join the guard. If you want to live join something else. Marines have to know how to swim since your primary mission is to seize and defend forward naval bases. Obviously you deal with water. But as buck says it isn't hard. You only qualify once. If you go for your scuba bubble then it gets fun. If you are in the infantry chances are you will have to do egress from a submerged ch 46 simulator. Loads o fun. Suck it up and deal you'll do fine. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

You would have to be chromosomally challenged to join these days. I've been out of the Army 2 years, and I am glad to be out on a regular basis. The whole establishment of the Army is rotting from the outside in. Look at the Army's advertising: "An Army of One". It's one big lie. At least the Marines tell you up front what the deal is. In their commercials, people fight. That's because Marines don't do all this "Army of One" shit, they just fight. The Army's mission can be summed up as "Win the War". Yet they duck that whenever they can, and it reflects in training. Even the elite units - Rangers and such - are feeling the change. They used to be a refuge from the "kinder gentler Army" garbage. If you are in the Army doing something other than Infantry, you might as well be in the Air Force. And even the Infantry is getting "sissified". Think twice. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I have to agree with Matt on this one. I'm glad I got discharged for having asthma. While I was very dissapointed at the time I got the boot, I look back and now and I'm glad. There's no future in the armed forces, plus the pay sucks. But we are all lucky that we have the greatest army in the world and I'm personally greatful for the men and women who serve to protect our freedom ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yea, I havent heard the "Army of one" commercial, but I heard Rush Limbaugh talking about it. Sounds like bullshit to me, I was in the Corps in the early 90's and it was name/rank/serial number, none of this army of one individualism shit. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

SX, You're right - our current servicemenr and women are all heroes. It's time our government started treating them like it, with a big pay raise and leadership they can respect and trust. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

What can the government do? You can't train people to be killers, then four years later release them back to society. The kindler, gentler approach allows these people to transition back to society easier. It's such a shame to see what is happening now. The hazings are history, beatings are out in favor of article 15's. Discipline is almost nonexistent, young marines show no respect. Thank god I am out, because I couldn't deal with the pussy attitude. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nutzz, The kinder, gentler approach has nothing to do with transitioning back to civilian society. It reflects a societal change, where insensitivity and un-politically correct speech have become veritable crimes. Example: During eh Ashcroft confirmation hearings, Senator Chuck Schumer said fo Ashcroft, "He has shown a lack of sensitivity at times." As you can see, this pervades our society. The military can't escape it. Why are young oficers leaving the Army in droves? Because senior leaders are more concerned about "sensitivity" than fighting and winning the war......At Fort Benning, the Army's "Home of the Infantry", teh commanding general actualy forabde the singing of certain running cadences because they were "in poor taste". This is at the home of the Infantry....can you imagine how it is in support units? Anyway - ou know what I am saying if you have served. The first step to restoring teh military is to make all pay to active duty servicemembers TAX-FREE. Thsi would eliminate the need for tiny little pay raises - it would be a nice big one, and it would create a reason to join and stay. I can explain the rationale behind this - it;s not a knee jerk soultion by me. Once you have people that want to be there - anything can be done. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
