First off, I'm a straight guy that doesn't discriminate against anyone based upon their sexual preferences. However, I am suprised by the fact that the majority of people who regularly engage me in conversation in the gym are what I perceive to be gay men. While I am not going to say I'm ugly, I do look like a bloated test-freak at 6'1" 290lbs and 12%fat. In addition, I dress like a slob in cut-off clothes. I figure most people are either turned off or intimidated, so what gives here?

This just proves my theory: it's always the fat ugly guys that think we want them.

well that's what happends when you work out in west hollywood... hehehe. i don't talk to anyone, i went even so far as to hire a personal trainer to spot me so I don't have to ask anyone... however Jae's wisdom convinced me to get over my shyness and ask whoever is next to me if they are not busy.

Arm - Consider it a compliment that you're approachable and not as intimidating as you think. I'm not a big guy. I weigh 174 pounds and I approach guys at the gym who are twice my size all the time. Why? Because if I ask them a question, e.g. better technique, a lot of times they know what they're talking about and I learn from them. By the way, I hope when anyone shows you friendship, you're friendly back, whether they be gay or straight. ------------------

Thanks for your insights May. I do consider myself a nice guy, and I am always polite to people in the gym, even when they do those annoying things like talk me during an intense set. I was only trying to point out what I considered to be an unusual phenomenen, given the circumstances. I think part of it stems from the fact that I am the only powerlifter in the facility, as it caters mainly to individuals interested in basic toning and conditioning.

I do the same thing Johnny did. I always ask a trainer if I need help b/c I don't want other guys to think I'm hitting on them (in particular, straight guys and attitudy gay guys -- i.e., pretty much all the lifters). Frankly, I think most straight guys would be disappointed to know how rarely gay guys are attracted to them. I bet May's right -- you get asked questions because you're a serious lifter and look approachable.

Now you know how chicks feel. I feel sorry for girls at the gym that are just trying to work out and have guys all over them. My GF works out with me cause she was tired of guys hitting on her. I have gay guys hit on me at the gym, but I take it as a compliment. If your secure enough with yourself then no big deal. It's the guys that freak out are the one's that have the problem.
