Hey guys, it's me Magnum. Wondering if anyone here has a security clearance. In particulars, wondering what the process is as far as background checks, et al. This company is on my jock hard, and the money is silly, but I'm concerned with the background aspect of the process. Yeah.

Depends on the company. If it is a private company its not as tough, drug screening, poloygraph, maybe interview some of your friends. If it is law enforcement or a high level goverment job they have acesses to your whole life, good and bad.

Also depends on the level of clearance. Confidential level is pretty routine. Anything above that gets serious. They asked for every address I've ever lived, and wound up interviewing my ex-wife's friends even though we'd been divorced over 10 years ago. Ever since then, if I applied for a job and it required a security check I've declined to persue that job unless the pay was extraordinary and since it never has been, I haven't had to endure it again.

Interesting. Well, I've started the process rolling, if you know what I'm saying. Chatted with an acquaintance in the same company, different project, and he was saying that they were pretty damn thorough. Am I worried? You think my shit don't stink? The question then is this: should a person be honest about past indiscretions? My friends would be cool covering about some stuff, but if they went to friends of friends as in john937's case, I'm fucked. Honesty? Is it really worth it?

I have a friend who is in the FBI and he said they followed him around for a year, and talked to all his teachers and neighbors and anybody else they could find.

Someone my buddy knows applied for some government agency like the CIA, or FBI, and they did an extensive background check, interviews all his friends and family, looked into their backgrounds, and knew everything about him. He went to a hotel for an interview and they went through his trash and checked and all kinds of crazy shit. They ordered him some room service and already knew what kind of food he liked and crazy shit like that.

It all depends on what you are applying for and what type of company it is. It can't be all that secret can it? Military contractors, consultants, and other civilian companies that work with the government are as tight if not tighter than the Fed Govt. There is more corporate espionage than anything else anymore. Very few foreign countries have decent enough intelligence gathering cabilities these days. What is your definition of "security clearance"? ------------------

It depends on who you are working for and the level of clearance. If it is somewhere like a shipyard or such then the clearance will be through the DOD (Department of Defense) and they have 4 different levels. If it is with a National laboratory or such then it will be through the DOE (Department of Defense) they have basically 2 levels. They both hire private companies to do the research for it. Just don't tell a lie because that will automatically disqualify you. Just having been in a little trouble does not mean you won't get the clearance. ------------------ |
