this might seem to be an odd question. -i was adopted at 5 and spoke korean till i was like 6 years old. btw my parents are white, so they never spoke korean or anything. -how long would it take to learn do you think a decent level? -this korean-american girl was asking me about it and was telling me that though she can speak perfectly, koreans can tell she is not native korean speaker really, and that i should be able to pick it up quickly and not have a noticeable accent for awhile...thoughts?     | ||

i have a horrible accent no matter what language i learn, but i don't learn them that well, just enough to get by when traveling. | ||

Ahn-young hah-say-oh! If you really apply yourself, you chould be able to achieve conversational fluency in 2-3 years. If you just want to be able to order bibim-bop or hail a taxi, then no more than a year. I guess it depends on how quickly you pick up languages in general. BTW, I'm a caucasian, but I travelled alot growing up. I speak a couple of foreign languages, but only pidgin Korean. Good luck! | ||

It's cool to learn new languages but I haven't even mastered my own yet. Some of the english words of high is a doozy. | ||

Ironically, I'm the director of the Languages division of a higher education institution. The consensus among lingusists,is that it takes the average individual 3 years of consistent study to master a language. My theory is that if you are musically inclined, that is, having an inate ability, you will pick up a second language much faster and thoroughly. Just my theory. I speak Portuguese as my first language, English ,Italian,Spanish and just a lil of French oh and i can read music (drums)lol..that about it.... |
