your not human-------
I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at As you got older, you moved around more slowly. Then, one day, old age I thought, "No... thank you for taking care of me." By Chuck Wells ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I'm sobbing at my desk ... I'm remembering the Irish Setter my family had as a kid! When I was about 8 we got him, Gilligan. He had long red hair. You can see how beautiful he was by looking at our family photos at the time. He was in all our pix. Then, if you look at a Christmas picture of us when I was about 18, Gillian is laying there in front of us with alot of the red hair having turned gray. He died while sleeping at the foot of my brother's bed. ... ack! I want my mommy! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Hardest thing I ever did. Doc f'ed up the procedure. I wrote about it once here - sucked. I have my other dog getting ready and it hurts to watch. He's been the best dog I have ever know. Had a stroke about 6 months ago and is just not coming back around. At 14 I guess I shouldn't ask for much. Used to be I never got up or worried until he did. Was taught not to bark unless it was time. He would raise the hair on his neck and get the juice on. Anyway he lost his hearing in the stroke and the use of his middle ear. So all in all the fact that he can still get around is awesome. At time I see youth in him - when that leaves I start to make a chioce. ![]() ![]() ![]()

We had a weiner dog that was paralyzed because she jumped off the bed wrong. She was 4 1/2 when it happened. We tried giving her shots to decrease the swelling but it didnt work. She lost the movement in her back legs. That next saturday we went to the vet and he brought her out. We said our goodbyes and had her put to sleep. One of the hardest things I have ever done. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Timac, My dog had cancer last Spring - she was 13 and had almost nothing left. The tumor had gotten so big that treatment would no thelp...it was just a matter of time until she didn't wake up. Not wanting her to suffer in pain we took her to the vet to have her put to sleep. The dog must have known what was happening, because as old and weak as she was (she was weak at that point - never barked, rarely even got up, much less played with us) she didn;t want to go with the vet. She fought and fought and fought....finally she acquiesced and went along....but that was tough...even though I knew she was in great pain and it would be alleviated....I miss my dog. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

that sucks Matt. we had sharpei that got cancer on her leg, to save her we had her leg cut off, but about a month after that we had to put her down because the cancer already spread throughout her body. I know the feeling. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I remember when we put our dog down a couple months ago. It was a shame to see her deteriorate throughout the months before we finally did it. She used to walk around in circles b/c her one hip hurt so much to go the other way and when she lost her ability to use her back legs she pulled herself around with her front ones. Only thing that helps is knowing ya did the right thing. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I put my old dog down a couple of months back, I posted about it I think..he was 12 and had cancer of his lympth glands which spread to his chest. I got the vet to come round home to give him the injection, it was very hard. I still miss my old mate. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Oh Man! I teared up reading that thing. I have my 9 year old Golden retriever right here next to me on the floor by my feet. She means the world to me. You really learn the feeling of Unconditional love from a dog. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Good story...you need to publish that and put it in every vets office. the hardest thing is putting a dog to sleep. It seems we are sadden more by the loss of our pets than by the loss of a family member. I know the pet is considered family. SAD MAN REALLY SAD... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I had a beagle, his name was George, we got him when i was 13. He was there through all my rough times, when my parents passed away he was all I had left to call my family, when all my friends fucked me over and wouldn't help me get though my rough times, he was there. there was a point when I felt if I didn't have him there, I would have jumped off a roof just to end my grief. Needless to say, this dog meant the world to me. He was there for 13 years until he was diagnosed with chronic kidney failure, which kept getting worse and worse. It was a saturday and i made the decision to have him put to sleep the next day, as I couldn't do it then because i was trying to get ready to go get married. What was supposed to be the happiest day of my life was becoming the saddest. It took about 10 cups of beer to make it through the wedding reception without breaking down, I made it until all the guests had left, then i told my wife and started bawling. I just wanted to go home and spend the last few hours with him I could. When we got there though, he had already passed and was just laying there. People tell me he knew I had someone else who could take care of me now, so he went up to heaven to play catch with my parents. That's all I can type, I'm at work and already had to run to the batroom 3 times to dry my eyes. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]()

Sorry to hear that KrazyK. The middle ear is what gives you your balance. Humans have one to. After the stroke everthing just got wacked. It took several week for him to get some of it back. Never will get it all back. [This message has been edited by Cleaner (edited January 25, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]()

I had a chow from the time I was 3 to 21. 18 years. He heard every problem I ever had. When I moved to Atlanta, I came back two weeks later to pick him up as I was getting everything moved in and settled earlier and he died that morning before I made it back home. It was as if he saw me moving away and finally realized that his work was done, that I really didn't need protecting anymore. I loved that dog to death. I even had my pictures made in a studio with him. And he used to give my son rides around on his back all the time. sigh... I am going to go cry now. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

He is 153 pounds of big-baby!!! When we are in public, my wife always walks him, as it seems to calm folks when they see 120 pound woman walking him rather than me. If you have never owned a Rottie - you have no idea of what a pure joy they are to have around. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Rotties are awesome. I love big breeds. I had a Great Dane as a kid. First time I ever saw my Dad cry is when he came back from the vet without him. Big breeds get cancer easily. George Carlin once said that when you buy a pet you are buying a tragedy. Now, I have two male bullmastiffs and cringe at the thought of losing either one of them. The older dog has warded off strangers from the house more than once. My hubby works out of town alot and I feel safe with them. I trained dogs on the side for years. Brutus is the only shutzhund trained bullie I know. You should see him hit a sleeve. I would love to see the intruder's face if he ever got into the house. Peace of mind is what I should have named him. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

St. Louis alley mutt. Half shepard/half pitbull. He about 1 1/2 in that pic. He was 5 weeks old and on death row at the Humane Society couldn't leave him to die. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Good for you! Bet your glad you went down there that day. Blue ticks are a helluva breed as well. Another fav of mine. My brother has several grand champions. Some hunting mofos. My neighbor and I used train dogs at the humane society so that people were knocking on doors to adopt them. It's amazing how people can be so cruel. They buy dogs and once they pee in the house, beat em a little then if the dog is lucky gets to meet phenyl barbitol at the human society. Or they get dogs like aussies which require tons of exercise and then lock em up in a one bedroom apartment and expect them to sit around all day.... Whoever said posting that poem/story that started this thread should be posted at every vet's office is right... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
