Ok - this dickhead has been sentenced to a minimum of 18 years 11 months. BUT, his attorney has filed an appeal. The grounds for the appeal are that "there were no black males" on the jury, but there were three black females. So it seems to me that his attorney will not be debating the actual case, but looking for a technical loophole. I suppose it is their legal right, and it doubt it will work. BUT, guess who is paying for this? Not Rae Carruth. NOPE. CARRUTH'S DEFENSE WAS PAID FOR BY THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA. So, if you live in NC, well, enjoy paying for this asshole.     | ||

Matt, Why is NC paying for his defense? Did he choose to have counsel provided for him? I admit I have not been following this case--channel surf right by on on CourtTV. | ||

Not to defend the guy but we'd all be doing the same exact thing if we were sentenced to 18 years in prison. I'd find any little loophole possible to try and get out. My question is why didn't he have Johnnie Cochran as his lawyer? Or even the guys that defended Lewis. I watched the Lewis case and those guys were pretty damn good IMO. | ||

Carruth spent any money he had during the first legal go-round...you remember: the one where he jumped bail and hid in a trunk. Now he claimed he was indigent and he had state-appointed counsel. My source for this is Newsday, a popular Long Island paper. I'm sure it's on the web. | ||

interesting...i haven't watched or followed the trial that closely but everyone i talk to raves about the job carruth's attorney has done. is it REALLY true that his attorney is a PD? i've heard so many people saying that his lenient sentence just proves what a high-powered, well-paid attorney can do, but if he's actually court-appointed it throws that theory right out the window... | ||

kat??? he is/was a wide receiver for tha carolina panthers, an american football team (the only real football)... MATT- did you see his lawyers arguments for dropping the verdicts? he made a lot of sense in a logical way, however the judge didnt go for it fortunately... the funny thing is, the lawyers main premise was that carruth was found not guilty for murder... so he showed the connections on how carruth would HAVE to be GUILTY of murder for the other charges to have stuck.... kind of fucked up but since he got off on the murder 1 charge the lawyer is now using that as his defense. in order to do charges 2, 3, and 4, the lawyer is saying he had to do charge 1, the murder charge... but since it was thrown out then the others should be thrown out... very nifty arguments.... but the fucker should be shanked on day 2 in prison... | ||

Matt this is an old trick...When you know your guilty , you put all your $$$ and property you have in someone elses name.And let the people on the outside help you.Paying everyone you can- by someone else.And claim indigent.Got love it..our tax dollars at work.  ------------------ | ||

Dixie, I know it's a sham. I just wanted to point out that he didn't use an O.J. style defense - where his lawyers overpowered the judge and jury. Steel, I'm all for a hideous execution. But instead, NC will spend approximately $700,000 to support this guy. |
