I write grants you-know for worthy causes and what have you. Anyway, these people called me requesting I write several grants for their organization. When they called they asked if I could write my fee into the grant proposal somehow. I tell them that it doesn't work that way--They ask me how much I would charge and I tell them that it depends on where they are in the process and what data they have gathered and organized thus far. We could talk about it later. So...I go to a city council meeting today to meet with these people and they introduce me to the crowd and say... This is Riptchick who will be writing our grants and so graciously waived her fee." WTF!!!!!!Ok, now everyone is applauding. I step back and say to the person next to me...whoa wait a minute I didn't waive my fee. They say don't worry about it we'll take care of you later. Ok, any suggestions on how to proceed?

First of all don't waive their fee. That was really damn conniving and cheap of them to do that to you. Write their grant but do everything in your power to make sure it costs them more than it normally would and don't rush it.

I think that I am going to request my fee upfront. It may cost me the job (sadly I could have used that money) but it would be the only sure-fire way to insure my work would not go uncompensated.

I agree whole heartedly with Jae on this one. Don't do a thing until you at the very least have something in writing outlining your fee, when it is to be paid, and the manner in which it is to be paid. ------------------ Because I want to . . . Because I have to . . . Because I need to . . . Because I can!

riptchick...yes..ask for the money up front...explain to them this is not your normal buisness procedure, however, when they made the false statement that your services were pro-bono, it created a abnormal buisness practice which is operating undue false pretense...therefor prepayment will be required....if they back out...then they were probably never going to pay you in the first place....and you just saved yourself trouble and money

I would tactfully explain to them that you did not agree to any "fee waivers" -no exceptions, insist on pre-payment. They sound like they know what they're doing and are probably very good at these kinds of slight-of-hand tricks - in a public forum etc. It dosen't sound like you inferred that you "may" waive your fee, in fact just the opposite. They are not naive, they know exactly what they are doing, and why $. If they're legit, they will not have any issues with pre-payment, would you, NO. Volunteer at a charity if you want to work for free... Good luck. |
