Ok, heres the thing. I had previously had two computers hooked up to one cable modem. Thing is, i didnt do it so i dont know how it was set up. We had the cable modem running into a hub then out to the two computers. Im just curious how to establish ips on both computers, or how to do it period. Another twist, the cable modem will only be one way for a few months so both computers will have to dial up for upload. Any ideas?

Bummer. When your cable is hooked up right, meaning up and down, get a linksys router from best buy, or order a nexland router from www.nexland.com. You can then hook up 253 computers behind your cable modem. The nexland is much better, but the linksys is cheaper and very functional. Good luck.

I should add, the key to this setup is me not buying anything. Just wanting to re set it up like it was before with the hub i have.

interesting problem.. .. the key to this is whether your cable ISP is giving out IP's via DHCP to anything that requests it or.. ..specifically gives one IP for each, denying all others. A two to one (two computers to cable modem) will require a hub. No way around that. Linksys 4 port hubs are around $25. If your cable ISP gives all requesters IP addresses, that is all that is needed. If your ISP gives only one IP address, you are going to have to set up some type of proxy server.

Assuming that they do johnny, how would i find out? It is comcast@home if that helps whatsoever. And assuming they dont, how would setting up a proxy server be done.

Assuming that they give out DHCP address to all, just hooking the computers and the hub to the cable modem, and then at the dos command prompt type either "ipconfig" (for Win2K), or "winipcfg" (f0r 95) will tell you if you have an IP address, and what it is. To set up a proxy server, is another story. Hmm.. One of your computers will have to be installed with Win2K server. There are probably other proxy server software however I have not explored what is available.

Johnny, I'd be willing to bet they are using DHCP. My ISP does this and all I use is a hub. Not too bad. If you do in fact need a proxy server, see what software is available on the Internet. I know Apache makes freeware for web servers...so you just might find something for a proxy server out there...... also I think you can use NT 4.0 server to set up a proxy server (NT and more software would be required)....but NT 4.0 server is probably floating around if you know any computer people.
