i am learning to fight now and i have 2 questions.

i am going "chest" with myself, by hitting myself in the ribs, stomach & back either with my fist, a boxing glove, or a fist wrapped in a belt. (i don't hit myself in the head as i was developing a concussion).
i find that when i hit myself with the belt wrapped fist i sometimes get large swelling, like a 2-3 inch diamater & 3/4 inch high welt that becomes a bruise a day later. will constantly giving myself these bruises & swelling (2-4 times a week) cause any serious damage to my body. i don't want to fracture any bones or damage any organs. will constantly causing so much trauma that swelling results cause any serious injuries.

also, i do not want to get arrested for battery, aggravated battery, or anything like that. do i have to make sure that the other person starts the fight, provokes it, or that he does just as much damage to me so i can press charges back. how can i avoid getting arrested. i am not a bully, and i don't pick on people. i only defend myself.

depends on the state.
I know that in some states if you take martial arts you have to be registered as a weapon - I know it sounds stupid.
and the self defense usually flies, but if it comes out in court that you are training in any arts and the other guy isn't, you are going to always have problems.

LOL!!

If you see the cops, then run like hell! They most likely won't chase you because it just means useless paperwork...

the problem with your "training" is that most fights usually have blows to the head/face.

also, I'm a little disturbed that you're willing to inflict this kind of damage to yourself in the name of self defense. may i suggest you take a legit martial arts class? They're reasonably affordable and some are great forms of excercise. If money is an issue, your YMCA or public rec centers usually have some sort of martial arts/self defense classes. Trust me, beating yourself isn't going to do anything by leave bruises and welts all over your body. Try explaining that when you take off your shirt at the beach or for mrs. stalin.

Get some gloves and grab a friend and beat the hell out of eachother. We used to do that at work during lunch break for fun, it's a hell of a workout as well. Even got some KO's but it's all good with the gloves!
Fighting is like anything else practice makes perfect or good enough to beat some ass anyways.

hah hah! this was a funny, but at the same time sad post. Man, I'll tell you a couple of things:

Ok, I'm not an expert on Martial Arts, I have taken some Karate and Judo, etc, hopefully I'll be less busy now that I'm out of school to keep pursuing these arts.

Just because you know martial arts doesn't mean you're invincible, and here's why:

1. There's no guarantee in a fight that you know more than the other guy, no matter how good you think you are.

2. If the enemy pulls out weapons, like a knife, you've just been seriously undermined.
If they pull out a gun, unless you're close enough to reach it, there's nothing you can do to protect yourself, unless you're Jackie Chan.

3. Be perceptive! VERY perceptive! look for weaknesses in the enemy! is he skinny? fat? muscular? is he drunk? do they seem to be hiding weapons?

4. If you need to, invent your own weapons! anything within your reach, glass bottles, chairs, even your belt (you can take it off and smash the buckle against the guy's face)

5. ALWAYS WATCH YOUR REAR!

6. Avoid a fight as much as possible, especially in crowded areas! nobody will help you, and it's more likely someone will help your ENEMY. If you couldn't avoid fighting, then this is the time to drop ALL FEAR, forget EVERYTHING that might make you afraid to fight, just concentrate on ways to win, because once you're in, you better win.
