My dog got (presumably) bitten by a fox twice his size tonight. He started yelping and crying, and he cant move his rear legs at all- he moved by dragging himself by his front legs. We cant see any bleeding or signs of a bite. What human medines can we give him? he seems to be in a hell of a lot of pain but i am afraid to give him anything as i know nothing about canine physiology. he is 9 years old, and his hip joint inflammed 2 years ago (anti-inflammatories cured it) buts thats it- very healthy, very lively. He's quite small (probably only 80cm length, 40-50cm height-these are approx. values). he's a cross breed (alsatian/ jack russel/doberman) There is no rabies in the UK, so no worries there. its 12pm here, the nearest vet opens 7 am. please respond if u know anything that might help. im gonna check here every hour or so. on a separate note if anyone knows how to hunt foxes please respond. i am an extremely good shot but have no firearms, just a BB gun and many cricket bats/knives/fireworks and i want to kill it. extremely painfully. with prejudice [This message has been edited by danielson (edited January 09, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]()

Man to be honest with you it sounds like a broken bone if he has to drag himself around. I think you need a vet. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I don't have any advice for treating the dog. I agree with check though, definately sounds like he broke something or reinjured his hip. Get yourself a .22 caliber semi automatic rifle and plug that fox. Maybe a shotgun and use some double ot buckshot for ammo. That'll rip right through a fox. Both guns are relatively inexpensive. I'd go with the remington brand. They're inexpensive and will get the job done. ![]() ![]() ![]()

You can always trap them too. Get a coil leghold trap and some urine or some type of other scent lure. I wouldn't go this route if other dogs are nearby or your own. You never really know what you're gonna trap. At least with a gun you know what you're shooting at. You can get a live trap but they're more expensive. You don't run the risk of killing the wrong animal if you go this route. A good double door live trap designed for foxes and coyotes. This also gives you the choice of how you want to eliminate the animal. A BB gun won't do any real damage at all. Knives and bats require you to be at a very close range. This will never happen with a healthy fox. You're gonna have to resort to some other method. [This message has been edited by Latimer (edited January 09, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]()

Oh yeah, you can try poisoning it too. Mix it with some strong flavored food. Again you run the risk of killing the wrong animal. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Take him to a vet. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Latimer.....read where he's from...he's from England. I don't think a .22 or shotgun is going to work for him. Handguns, etc. are outlawed there correct? Get yourself a crossbow, bait that thing and then put an arrow through it's back. Don't kill it just yet, in fact if you really love that dog, I would injure the fox and then cripple it like what it did to your dog. You need to see a vet. If your dog can't move his rear legs then he must have damaged himself pretty bad. Dog's are pretty resilient. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

thanks for all the info. i'm considering the poison in the meat routine. despite all my firearms experience with assault rifles, machine guns, missile launchers, pistols, shotguns, rifles and archery, all of the things i have mentioned are illeagal in this country i do live in a residential area though, so no oher animals i give a rats arse about. ill lay some poison out for it. once again cheers for the rapid response. if anyone knows anything i can give to him to help with the pain it would be brilliant. he's laying on his injured side in an attempt to insulate and warm whatevers wrong with him, and he won't let anyone near it, and forcing him will make it worse. oh and sorry for the long posts [This message has been edited by danielson (edited January 09, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]()

i live in the suburbs of london (which is still pretty built up-its in the top 10 cities of the world in size)--> right next door to a school. couple that with an extremely racists police force (they shot an irish guy on a motorway because someone said he was an irish guy with an uzi- he was fixing a flat tyre!) and there is no way in hell i'd be permitted any kind of firearm (though i love shooting. in the COUNTRYSIDE its a different story. those guys got shotguns, and hunting rifles which are allowed by law. but funnily enough they don't hunt like that (much anyway). they all get on horses with hundred of hunting dogs and chase the fox for miles until it's too knackered to move, then the dogs rip it apart--> us city folk are trying to ban it. i don't hate all foxes- just 1 in particular. and it shal pay. yes it shall. indeed! ![]() ![]() ![]()

damn, sounds serious call a vet. if thats out of the question, from the description of the dog's size, a .22 should fix him right up. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

yeah i was kinda pissed off then....i was just thinking of all the birds and shit that could eat any poison i left out, not only would i feel bad but i could get into a WHOLE lot of trouble. i'll keep an eye out, and if i hear anything outside, after ive spotlighted the area (i've got a high crime rate locally) i'll go out. if its STILL there it's better "g'it fast" i jst get mad when my dog can't sleep becuase he's in so much pain. and that theres no 24hr vet. transporting him to the vet ought to be 'entertaining tommorow' and i sure as hell am not killing him. one of my relatives had a 3 legged dog, and in ameria theres a 2 legged one. but if he is paralysed that fox better never return. thanx for all the posts , there's not much more i can do for him now, so i better get what sleep i can. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Blunt weapons might work well considering a fox isn't all that big, just bash its head in with a bat or you copuld always throw really big rocks at it if your a good shot, sounds stupid but can be effective ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

You guys are too funny. Bats, spears, rocks, 22 cal. gun. Have any of you tried to kill a fox? Them sons-a-bitches are fast as hell. I would go with the bait in the back yard and the cross bow out the back window. You could try giving the dog an asprin. One of my dogs weighs 9 pounds and when she is sick and I can't take her to the vet, that's what I do. Good luck! ![]() ![]() ![]()

well i took him to the vet....he has injured his spinal column. he must have fallen on it, twisting it and either displacing or shifting a 'disc'. theyre X-raying him, and all kinds of shit to see whats wrong. he has no motor control so he can't move his hind legs, but he has knee-jerk reactions and is touch sensitive down there SUGGESTING the spinal column didn't snap. if it has, or it does in the future we'll have to put him down. i'll know in a few hours whats up. i hope to hell he's alright since i've known him over half my life. and what i'm gonna do if he is put down is lay some meat in the garden, set up some camo netting and lay down in it. i play cricket so i am a good thrower and im gonna pound that thing with 5oz cricket balls and chuck fire works at it. they move fucking fast though but what the hell. just as a final note if anyones animal suffers this type of injury (apparently it's very common), a cortisone (or corticosteroid) injection within 8 hours can heal the dog very quickly. its a pity since we thought he had been bitten. if he has snapped his spinal cord no injection would help him. cheers for all the replies though. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I know your pissed at this fox, but there's no cause for cruelty here.My dog gets into fights with other dogs and sometimes looses.I don't go after the other dog with a bat, he learns, next time he avoids the dog.If your really worried it will come back trap it, and get the R.S.P.C.A. to collect it.Or maybe they'll lay a trap for you.The fox only acted on instinct, its only trying to survive.Anyway i hope your dog recovers quickly and you don't do anything rash. ![]() ![]() ![]()

danielson, trust me, thats not going to work. That fox will smell you a 1/2 mile away and you'll never see it. Stay in your house and shoot it out the back window. ![]() ![]() ![]()

First I hope your dog gets better, I wish that K9 a healthy recovery, I would help your dog out by getting him stoned with some high grade marijuana, just make him a doggy biscuit with herb in it, he will feel much better or better yet make a gang of doggy biscuits for yourself, dogs and others. peace ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

yeah, i was actually wondering how good a foxes sense of smell was. i know it sound stupid but i'm gonna wait to see what the prognosis is for my mutt. if he's gonna be put down i have no idea how i'll react (but it won't be pretty). if he's gonna recover i'll just call the RSPCA and tell them to exterminate/neuter/remove it. havoc they were gonna give him opiate based drugs which are basically morphine so that woul have seen him spaced out! and i eat his dog biscuits, they're actually quite nice! i tried getting a crossbow at my schools armoury about a year ago, the guy was throwing them out, but he wouldn't let me ![]() this country is unbelievably anti-gun. while this might be good for saftey on the street, it means i fuind it very hard to do as a sport. my dog has a haemotoma on his spine, but the spinal column is intact so he won't lose muscular ability. they're trying to let the haemotoma go down on its own, then see if his legs get there motion back. if so, a little bit of atrophy training and hopefully he'll be alright. wfabrizio -> is that your gun? and your uniform? that shit doesn't look standard issue. or american? ![]() ![]() ![]()

That picture is not one of my own. The soldier in that picture is using a Polish wz.96 Beryl rifle. 5.56mm gas operated. The rifle resembles in some ways the Russian AK74. The soldier is a member of a European special forces unit during the early stages of the conflict in Bosnia. You sound experienced in the ways of war. ------------------ [This message has been edited by Wfabrizio (edited January 10, 2001).] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

lol@check. i'll sum it up so i don't piss off anyone with all the shit above: my dog has a haemotoma on his spine, but the spinal column is intact so he won't lose muscular ability (i hope). they're trying to let the haemotoma go down on its own, then see if his legs get their motion back. if so, a little bit of atrophy training and hopefully he'll be alright. erm.... just mentioning this out of passing, if anyone is pissed of at this thread being here tell me to delete it, i don't mind since my dog is now in doggy hospital so the urgency is gone! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Best wishes to your dog. Hope he get better quick. I woukdn't blame the fox he was doing what he felt he had to. Unless rabid, which you say england does have, I could see no reason for him to attack your dog. I would write it up as a pain full lesson. If you do go after him don't use chemicals. Find a quick way to put him out. Sorry again - Dogs are a member of the family. ![]() ![]() ![]()

I wish your dog the best. My dog has been with me for 9 years now. These were the hardest times of my life with my girlfriend leaving a couple of years ago, me moving out of state and my father/best friend passing. My dog has been there for me always. I wish you the best of luck. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
