fortunately over here in Australia we are very rarely shown any of the pro wrestling here on our TV's. I found it really sad to see so many adults when in the states that were talking about WWF in the everyday conversation like it really meant something, i even met people that would plan their night in with WWF, how can anyone take these shows serious, i am really curious in how many people on this board are interested in these programs and if so why you watch these programs? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

People are interested in it for the same reasons they are interested in soap operas, sitcoms, movies, or sporting events. It is just a form of entertainment Barney. You can also ask why people are so serious about football. Afterall, it is just a game of above average sized men, tossing around a piece of leather, while beating the hell out of one another. So why do people take it so seriously? Because it tickles our nerves. Humans like to have their nerves tickled in the form of entertainment. Not too hard to figure out. -TG ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

but at least with football there is not a predetermined outcome, its a game of skill, if they told each team who was allowed to win before hand because it would appeal more to the public, then football would be the same. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

It's not about taking the shows serious. I think most people realize it's sports entertainment. The outcome is predetermined and some big moves are even rehearsed but don't think for a minute it isn't real. When I say real i'm talking about the bumps they take. These guys put it on the line everynight and work their balls off while maintaining a very gruesome schedule. Triple H for instance has been working continuously for two years and just recently got some time off. These guys are doing shows up to 5 days a week. There's really no money to be made untill you make it to the top level. Wrestlers on the Independant circuit are lucky if they make $50 a night. Their is a lot of skill involved. There's more risk in this business than any of the major sports. You have to be willing to trust the guy you're working with and vice versa. The wrestlers are raising the bar constantly. There are many unsuccessfull crossover athletes (particularly football and real wrestling)who couldn't make the cut. Either because it was too physically challenging or they didn't have enough of the other attributes needed to get over in the business. You have to be good on the mic and with crowd psychology besides the athletic ability. That's why some wrestlers can easily make the transition into acting or even politics (Ventura). Tie in the sex and violence and that's what I call one hell of a spectacle. It's no surpise why the sport has become so popular right now. Take a look at the Nielson ratings and checkout some of the numbers these shows produce. The NFL even offered the WWF money to move their flagship show (RAW IS WAR) from the Monday night time slot because it was really hurting the MNF ratings. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Wrestling is funny as shit. As long as you understand that it is simply entertainment, it can be quite enjoyable. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I used to love wrestling, especially watching early WWF and NWA (currently WCW). Sure they guys weren't as big, nor did they perform some of the crazy stunts they do now. But it was a little more.... dare I say, realistic. You didn't have people getting lit on fire, or characters that had supernatural powers. Today's wrestling is a little too over the top for even me. Don't get me wrong, if I have time I'll watch some now and then, but sometimes the storylines are really bad. To all the haters, it's really a soap opera for guys. P.S. One thing that seperates todays wrestling from 80's wrestling is the heels (except for Scott Stiener). Anyone ever see Pipers Pit? Roddy Piper was an excellent heel. But the best heel there was, the best heel there is, and the best heel there ever will be has got to be the Nature Boy, Ric Flair. Who the hell ever talked as much game as he did? Sure he wasn't physically impressive, but he took being a bad guy to the next level. He was a pioneer when it came to the locker room interview. Before Flair, wrestling consisted of a bunch of guys who couldn't speak. Flair was/is the most quotable wrestler...EVER. Nowadays everybody has to have some personality or they're not popular. I personally think that Rob Van Damm is the most underrated wrestler in the business today.... ------------------ Because of my title I was the first to enter here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Rowdy Roddy Piper was awesome. I remember Piper's pit. Remember when he got into with Morton Downy Jr.? Brother Love used to crack me up. I wish they still had their little setups like Piper's Pit and Brother Love's thing. ![]() ![]() ![]()
