Now when I get a new drive- how do I go about getting all of the data on this drive onto the new one?

just get another on top of it..dont replace it..and put the files like songs, pics, games on the new on because when your drive is full it will run slower so you want to try and even them out..

Yeah, dont replace it, just add another.
This poses an interesting question. If you were to replace it, what would you do with the old one? Considering the type of info some of us have on our HD's, I think I would destroy mine befor throwing it out. And I'd never have a shop switch it out. As a matter of fact, I never take mine in to have it worked on in fear of them downloading my shit.

Why not just add another HDD to your system?

Make it a SLAVE and leave the exisitng one as Primary.
