I keep hearing things like "too much catabolizes muscle and if you want to get big, you should limit yourself to 20 min 3 times a week" Or "you have to do cardio to lose fat" Well if you do that much to lose fat aren't you also going to lose muscle too?

Also "everyone is different...blah..blah...blah. Then why even say those things if everyone is different?

I do about 2 hours of cardio a week in addition to weights. I'm 40 and have been lifting about 3 years. Very difficult to put on muscle at that age if you have not been in the game, but I'm trying.

I cannot figure out how much cardio is too much for me.

Anyone out there have any opinions on this?

Thanks

First off, do it first thing in the morning, for about 30 minutes 3-4 times a week for maximum fat loss. Your body has gone through the whole night without food, so it has no sugars/carbos for energy and you will burn fat as a result. Dont eat anything when you first get up and go do cardio by the way.

I don't do any if I'm bulking. I won't even shovel the driveway while I'm bulking as not to eat up precious calories for growth. To answer your first question; Yes, if you do too much cardio you will loose muscle mass. Cardio is a very catabolic activity. The more intense...the more catabolic. The more you do...the longer your body is in a catabolic state. One of your quotes said if you want to loose fat you have to do cardio or something along those lines.....Not true. Very far from the truth in fact. Diet is the most important factor in fat loss. Metabolism is the next factor. Weight training and proper diet will yeild significant loses in fat and at the same time minimize catabolizing muscle thus keeping your metabolism up. If you are trying to gain weight then cardio is, in my opinion, a great waste of energy and needed calories. If you are in this for health reasons then cardio for heart health I guess is your thing. But if you are in this for the pure cosmetics of bodybuilding, cardio is not neccessary. I firmly believe(for bodybuilding purposes) that one should let thier diet take care of the fat issues. If you're a bodybuilder you arn't training to be an endurance athelete. If you're gaining too much fat...You're eating too many calories. Cut back on the calories, don't up the cardio.
