Ok I've enstalled ceiling fans where there was already an electrical box (from a light) in the ceiling......but if there is not electrical mounting there, and you have to go through the attic and install the box first.....

My QUESTION in a nutshell:...is it such a pain in the ass that I should just hire someone to do it?

------------------
Please excuse my typing errors, my large breasts get in the way;)

My father was a relentlessly selfimproving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts for being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring wed make meat helmets. When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Wilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum...its breathtaking. I suggest you try it.

When doing electrical or plumbing installations and carpentry like that, it's best to call a fat, beer-bellied professional. The more of their asscrack you can see, the better...

It's not difficult at all-just a few steps. If you have some scrap 2X4, screws and or/screw gun, a hacksaw blade/utility knife, and a ruler, then you can install the box yourself--it shouldn't take you more than an hour.
I would do it for the sake of learning something new (even how bad it is!) and a sense of accomplishment that "I did it!"
Good luck

You have to put up some braces to hold a ceiling fan... you can't just nail a junction box to a rafter and hook it up, unless you want it to drop on your head a few minutes later.

Although some may feel a sense of accomplishment by doing things themselves around the house, when it comes to plumbing and electrical wiring I would STRONGLY recommend hiring a COMPETENT and LICENSED professional. Try to get a recommendation from a friend (whose opinion you value) and remember, you usually get what you pay for!

Having said that, if you choose to install the ceiling fan yourself, Article 370-27(c) exception of the National Electrical Code states... "boxes listed for the application shall be permitted as the sole means of support." In other words, make sure you use a ceiling fan rated outlet box that is UL approved.

In reference to performing the other work yourself, how confident do you feel tapping into existing circuits and making the proper connections?

IMHO WIRING IS NO HOBBY. HIRE A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN.

Class dismissed. GOOD LUCK and make sure your homeowner's insurance coverage has not lapsed!

Got nothin' but LOVE for ya Agent!
