I am asking this in all seriousness. No flames please. Are Jewish people a distinct race? I suspect they are because only Jewish people get Tay-Sachs disease. Or, Is being Jewish simply describe a group of people practice Judiism (sp?) (as opposed to Christianity)?

Well let's see.. I say just a religions practice .. however .. Any group of people might choose to intermarry within their own group rather than bring an outside influence. With Jews this could have gone on for generations, causing certain genetic markers to become dominant, probably not enough however to be called another race. Ashkenazi Jews (from Eastern Europe) are primary affected by Tay - Sachs. | ||

Black people have a genetic condition that predisposes them to Sickle Cell Anemia. They are genetically different than the white race. If you draw comparisons, can one not argue that a genetic predisposition for certain diseases shared by a common group of people distinguishes them along racial lines? | ||

How much of a genetic change would be required to be qualify to be another race? What genetic ideal would we use as a standard? Families can have predisposition to certain diseases as well, but we wouldn't draw racial lines there. Actuall I was reading once that Finlanders had more genetic material in common with Africans than with Swedes. They are still researching that one. | ||

Regardign the sicle cell anemia, I remeber learning something about the high cases of Malaria in the african regions (trasmited by misquitos). Malaria had the same physiological effects on red blood cells as sickle cell anemia......I know sickle cell is genetic but..... actually I don't know what the hell I'm trying to say......I remeber....it was cool because some kids that were predisposed with sickle cell that got malaria, somthing funky happened and the mutations crossed and they were ok Isn't that a nice story | ||

Italians look different than the Swedes, yet we don't call them another race. We need a better definition of what race is. The research was trying to do that genetically, when they found that Finlanders had more genes incommand with certain Africans than Swedes, so we really can't use genetics as a line to divide race. | ||

According to good ol' webster: a division of mankind possessing traits that are transmissible by descent and sufficient to characterize it as a distinct human type but the distinction of how little/much/typ of triats very vague.........Therefore my final answer: Judiaism is a religion, Jewish people can be people who believe in that relgion, as well as a race, due to the act of breeding preference within the religion has caused certain genetic traits to become prelavent...hence creating a distinct human type But what the hell do I know....my ex was jewish, he had blue eyes, and blonde hair,... | ||

According to the Jewish Talmud, all non Jews are considered "Gentiles" and are inferior to the Jew. Gentiles are just another animal. The Talmud states that Jews are a superior race and I am sure a lot of them believe this, with the exception of those who are not too religous. I find it funny that the Talmud says stuff like this, because the statements it contains are so racist towards "gentiles" yet Jewish people are very outspoken against prejudice (when it is against Jews). Don't take this the wrong way, I am not racist or prejudiced against anyone but I can't say that I agree that I am a Gentile, just another animal. | ||

Some of the common physical characteristics of Jewish people is due to the fact that they generally do not marry outside of the religion. This is why one often hears of someone converting when they marry a Jewish person. They have to in order to carry out the marriage. From what I understand about Jewish law, there is not necessarily life after death....but that when the Messiah comes at the end of the world, he will resurrect those that have lived righteously. I also understnad that Judaism teaches that those resurrected NEED NOT be Jews, as long as they lived righteously. where is Weapon X on this? | ||

its is both...however, there are many jews that ...convert to judaism...and in a sense their ethnicity changes...because ethnicity is not something that is defined...it is generally considered what...one identifies him/her self as...there are black jews by conversion, asian...etc...in israel there are actually a fair number of ethiopian jews...if i knew how to do it...i would put up a link to a picture of ethipion jews serving in the IDF (israel defense force)... | ||

i forgot to add that my parents who are very waspy converted to judaism about 25 years ago...and they are pretty religous...they identify as being jewish ethnically ...not anglo saxon. they also have a black friend that converted to judaism and they dont even consider him black they consider him jewish... | ||

bsmooth...ur taking things out of context...every religion says stupid stuff about other religions...christianity, islam, judaism...etc...also no one really believes that...secondly if we assume what you say is true...so be it...b/c christains also murdered and burned people at the stake b/c they didnt accept catholism...so i dont think anyone can judge another group...b./c there are negative aspects to every group...i think for some reason...people believe that jews are some great and superior people...obv not the case...but that is the perception and fear that drives racist and nazi types...and insecurity...etc...dont think people should focus so much on the differences...sure the talmud might say some silly things but when in history did jews burn other peoples for not...accpeting judaism? never...so dont be so quick to judge another group of people...btw im not jewish... | ||

tay sachs disease is a genetic disease, where excess lipid (fat) builds up in the brain causing blindness, severe mental retardation...generally not nice. It is prevalent more in jewish communities but is being reduced with genetic screening. BSmooth that is a very valid point. (and i'm not trying to be xenophobic here!). Howver sadly it's not only there culture that does that. There are so many opinions and biasts in this world that have been built up on cultural and ethnic dicriminations the origins of which that date back many years ago and are responsible for so much of the armed conflict that happens today. The worst thing the human population is just like dogs (and the royal family). Inbreed and the genes go to shit. Blend them and you get a much better gene pool. |
