I'm getting my computer updated tomorrow guys and I was wondering if you all could let me in on what I NEED to get and what extra's I might think of getting.

I definitely want a DVD/CDrom drive,a CDR drive, and a zip drive installed. I was also wondering what you guys believe is the best as far as internet connection stuff. I guess its pretty evident that modemns dont have anything on cable connections, but I really have no clue what any of that stuff is.
What is the difference between cable, T1, T3, and DSL? What do they do and what do they cost? What is the fastest modemn out there in case I cant get something like that done?
Should I get a graphics accelerator?
How many gigs of memory should I probably get?
I'm probably missing a million other important questions so please give me an idea of what I should be asking for when I go for the update.
Thanks.

Grasshopper,

Conan is correct. It's getting so cheap to buy computers today that it's not practical to upgrade a computer or build yourself. DSL and cablemodems are a good investment. They usually run from 30 to 40 dollars a month. Just make sure you ask and compare the how much data can go to and from your computer (upstream and downstream). The sales rep will know what you're talking about when you ask. As for a graphics accelerator, they usually come with a new computer and for MEM 128 to 256 MB of RAM is a good bet. Remember: Don't buy the latest and greatest computer, because in 8 to 12 months it's not going to be so great. Try dell or gateway.

Get the T3. That's your best bet!

I have a DVD drive and I wanted one so bad so I got a computer with one and ive used it 1 time(ive had this computer for a year). I really doubt youll use it because its kind of weird watchin a movie on your computer but if you think you will..go ahead. Do you think youll be playing computer games? If you are going to and want to..get a voodoo 5 card. Cable is an internet service thats like road runner or @home. DSL is digital satilite line and is alittle better then cable but now much. t1 and t3 are really expensive so unless you got alot of cheese then go ahead and get one..t1 is about 1200-1500$/mo and t3 is somewhere around 3000$/mo. Id go with cable if its provided in your area, if not try DSL. For harddrive..you can get 20 gigs for 100$ so go ahead and get that and youll be set, get some more ram so you have 128 and your computer will be alright. You could get a sound card, speakers, mouse, keyboard, webcam, or many other things if you wanted too.

The only reason i got dvd on my pc is because i heard in the future software would be stored on them. I think it may be finally beginning to start. 3 years into my ownership of it.
