what is the "shelf life" for cooked meats in the freezer and the fridge? ------------------ My father was a relentlessly selfimproving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts for being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring wed make meat helmets. When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds, pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Wilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum...its breathtaking. I suggest you try it.

I know for steaks & chickens I wont leave 'em in the fridge more than 48 hours, if not cooked by then in the garbage they go. Freezer meats I wont keep more than 2 months, if the BF even allows them to be there that long!

In the fridge, I wouldn't go a day or two passed the "date of sale". If you open the package and it looks or even smells REMOTELY odd - THROW IT THE HECK OUT. In the freezer I it's like a couple of months (3 or 4). I must confess I have cooked meat that was older, but it was only for me (I would NEVER give it to my kids.) and was somewhat freezer burned. Had a dry texture and appearance. I ended up throwing it out in the end. I go by the general rule I listed it above - If it looks and smells OK, cook it (improperly cooked meat will MAKE YOU SICK)...if it is questionable - THROW IT OUT. ------------------

Now THAT is a horse of another color. In the fridge I try to get rid of stuff w/in a week...but again, the "sniff test" rules. All of the TV hype about germs growing and shit is just that, hype. Besides, food is generally reheated anyway (unless we are talking lunchmeat here and then is it really worth the $1.29 saved to find out?). As for cooked food in the freezer, since I cook enough food for a small army (yes, BIGGER than the army I now possess, hehe) I do regularly freeze stuff for later reheating (ie soups, stews, lasagna, etc). I honestly don't know how long I have had some stuff in my freezer, but I can tell you it was waaaaaaaaaay passed 3/4 months. No one has EVER gotten sick in my house from left-over food that has been reheated (whether it be from the fridge or freezer). Hope this helps. And yes, I am frugal, but no, I would NEVER feed anything that was even REMOTLEY questionable to my kids. ------------------
