I would like to set my computer up as a server so that my webpage is stored there and people can access it via the standard http://www.whatever.net address. I am pretty computer literate, I just don't have the time I need to do a complete research.

Does anyone know how to do this?

I am running windows 2000 professional (NT 5.0)

How do I figure that out? If I don't, can I get it assigned from my provider?

yes you can. You need to know what ip address the web site will be. Most likely home users get a dynamic ip address from DHCP, but your provider can assign you a permanent IP if you want to host your web page on your computer.

JohnnyO,
What is my current IP? Then, I will log out and log back in and see if it changes. I suspect that it will. This would be a quick test of what I got.

DHCP could give you the same IP address back, so logging off and on will not help..

Do ipconfig /all at the command line prompt, and look to see if you have an DHCP address.

Is your gateway box the Cisco Home Gateway?

The box is a us west box it says it is a next level gateway made in california. Ring a bell?

from the command prompt do you mean the run box in the start menu or the actual dos command prompt?

Do the "ipconfig /all" at the dos prompt. If you do it at the run prompt it will disappear too quick.

Not familiar with US West products.

The winipcfg does not work from the start/run window. It says that components are missing.

Hey JohnnyO, what book should I get to assist me in this endeavor. Besides your brain bucket? Which is more than enough, but not always available.

Actually it's not that hard for a book, I'm not sure what book is available.

Get static IP
Register domain name
Tell ISP to add DNS record
Build your web page

Then you're done. Probably will have to set up a firewall of sorts to keep the security of your other files on the computer.

That sounds pretty easy. Then from there, I could set up my own email address and such. I have a registered domain name. I am running zone alarm which seems to work pretty well, I don't keep anything personal on the computer yet.

Will talk more about this tomorrow night, off to bed. Thanks.

Johnny is all over it.....your ISP may provide the firewall for you...there is also probably a monthly charge involved.....

you may want to look into IIS 4.0 to develop/host the web page.....and Microsoft Front Page.......

additionally - depending on the number of users you expect, you may have to purchase more bandwidth to accommodate them...i.e. a T1 or maybe even T3 line.....

I already have MS Frontpage, and I am going to check on the static ip today. Qwest, does not do any web hosting they just provide the connection and another company actually gives you webspace and email if you want their service.

Well off to work, chat more later.
