My sister is a teacher - high school history in NY city.

She said that the undergrad education classes aren't that bad...and the education majors I knew in college were no geniuses.

Each stse has different requirements. Many states require you to achieve a Master's in education before 5 years on the job or even sooner. Additionally, you have to be licensed by that state to teach in it.

Some states have their own certifcation exams, and others allow you to take a national certification that about 30 states accept.

They pay isn't really all that good. But my sister loves her job and how many people can say that honestly?
