Athletes are always looking for new alternatives and quicker ways to build muscle. While anabolic steroids may have been the buzzword in the 1980s, the "hormonal manipulator" in the 1990s is Human Growth Hormone (HGH). Failing to realize that Human Growth Hormone is capable of causing severe medical complications, these athletes are looking upon this growth hormone as being the new panacea of the decade.

HGH, commonly called somatotrophin or somatotrophic hormone, is a polypeptide hormone with a molecular weight of 21,000 (composed of 191 amino acids), and is produced by the pituitary gland, a small gland located directly behind the eyes.

During the past three decades, HGH has been used to treat growth deficiencies found in children. It used to be a difficult and expensive process to extract this vital hormone from the pituitary gland, but can now be produced synthetically via genetic manufacturing techniques. The synthetically produced hormone differs from the natural pituitary-derived hormone in that it contains an additional methionine amino-acid terminal.

With the capability of synthetically producing 10 g of HGH from a 10-liter bacterial suspension, a limitless supply of growth hormone has arrived. This is very promising for those who intend to use the drug for appropriate medical reasons, but the potential for abuse in non-medical related areas, namely the sports community, is at an all time high.

Physiology of Human growth Hormone
Human Growth Hormone (HGH) affects many body tissues. In adolescents it stimulates linear growth and the aging of the bones. In addition, HGH stimulates the intracellular transport of amino acids and causes nitrogen retention, a supposed marker of protein anabolism. The activity of messenger RNA is also affected, causing increased protein synthesis in specific cells. In addition, HGH stimulates the intracellular breakdown of body fat so that more fat is used for energy. The synthesis of collagen (the sticky substance that is the glue of the body) is stimulated, which is necessary for strengthening of cartilage, bones, tendons, and ligaments. Finally, HGH stimulates the liver to produce somatomedins, which are messenger molecules sometimes referred to as growth factors.

Dangers of Growth Hormone Excess
"Gigantism" and "acromegaly" are just two of the many complex side effects of excess HGH. "Gigantism" refers to larger physical stature. Acromegaly, a term first used in the 1880s, is an attempt to define certain clinical observations. The word itself comes from the root arc, which refers to the peripheral parts of the body, such as the hands, toes, and nose, and megol, meaning large.

Commonly, this disorder occurs in cases where a metabolic or tumor condition causes the pituitary to kick out inordinate quantities of HGH. Symptoms include a progressive increase in ring, shoe, or hat size, a coarsening of facial features, an increase in the size of the nose, lips, tongue, and the soft facial tissues, an underbite with enlargement of the mandible and the jaw, a more prominent forehead as the orbital ridges and frontal sinuses enlarge, a deep, husky voice, an increase in sweating and sebaceous gland activity, small patches of increased skin pigmentation, known as fibromata mollusca, a course appearance of the skin, and an increase in coarse body hair.

The growth of cartilage and soft tissues causes joint spaces to widen, leading to significant joint pain. In addition, distortion of the bony structures leads to disfigurement, while organomegaly and increased heart size often leads to congestive heart failure. People with this condition age very rapidly and are usually dead by the age of forty.

As educational leaders in sports medicine and fitness, we must encourage those under our guidance to stay clear of dangerous ergogenics like growth hormone. The half-life of HGH is relatively short, making it nearly impossible for it to be detected by standard drug-testing methods. Fortunately, Olympic scientists are working towards further testing techniques for the detection of growth hormone and other banned ergogenic aids.

Bob Goldman, D.O. is the founder and director of the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the High Technology Fitness Research Institute. He is the chief physician for the sport of body building in 137 countries worldwide and the chairman of IFBB/NPC Medical, Research, and Doping Committees.

very true, GH is one of the more dangerous and sides-prone hormone that bodybuilders supplement with. If considering use I would strongly suggest using it carefully and sparingly, and under the supervision of a physician would be even better.

It kinda reads like anti drug propaganda. 'You might have fun for a while but you'll soon be a disfigured pile of bones just begging for heart failure to end your constant pain'. heh heh B-)

Nice post, ive read about the acromegaly side effect before, very nasty because its irreversable. I saw a site on the net about this teenager in high school using it and he got acromegaly, it showed a picture of him, his body was extremely disformed. If i find it i will post.

I heard that Gigantism is caused by GH only if you use it while in your teen years.

The gigantism won't happen in your teen years just because you are a teen. You make a lot of natural GH until you are 25.

It's all in the dose. I'd never consider more than 9iu's a day, and that's pushing it (IMO). I've only used up to 4iu's because I am disgusted by the enlarging of the intestines. I've seen the intestine enlargement at only 5iu's a day, in other people. Everybody's different, but with me, I feel it in my hands before anything else. It's not like you wake up with a gap in your teeth and a big forehead.

I profoundly support chemically advancing the human body with respect to athletics and bodybuilding. But, all to often we get the + side of what we do. Never hurts to offer a blanace.

Here's a link to a guy that's been on GH (1.5 - 2iu) for years for replacement therapy. He's been monitored by doctors for sides and gone off for a while to have his natural GH tested. http://www.geocities.com/Paris/5000/table.html

The thing that gets me most about GH (besides the price!) is the gut. I wonder how much GH you have to do to get one of those big guys. B-)

I might try GH at 4iu next fall in a bulking cycle just to experiment. I never can pass on a new substance!

jhater, correction, i meant to say BEFORE PUBERTY, here's some info on this topic:
"The growth plates in a person continue to grow in length until puberty. After puberty neither an endogenous hypersection of growth hormones nor an excessive exogenous supply of STH (somatotropic hormone) can cause additional growth in the length of the bones. Abnormal size (gigantism) initially goes hand in hand with remarkable body strength and muscular hardness in the afflicted; later, if left untreated, it ends in weakness and death. Again, this is only possible in pre-pubescent humans who also suffer from an inadequate gonadal function (hypogonadism).
...The main side effects that are possible with STH are an abnormally small concentration of glucose in the Wood (hypoglycemia) and an inadequate thyroid function. In some cases antibodies against growth hormones are developed but are clinically irrelevant"
