In September, 1997 the FDA withdrew Fenfluramine (Pondium) and Dexfenfluramine (Redux). The two companies that manufactured these drugs voluntarily took them off the market. Primary pulmonary hypertension and neurotoxicity were just a few of the fatal side-effects linked to these drugs. They operate by increasing serotonin levels. The theory is ....obese people load up on carbs to elevate mood. Serotonin regulates mood and produces a sense of well-being, as well. So they gave the obese patients these drugs to increase serotonin, but they had unknown side-effects. As I recall, they did lose weight, but at what cost? Prozac is a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor and doses of 60mg have shown weight loss in clinical studies. After the Pondium and Redux were pulled off the market, some Dr.'s started prescribing Prozac to their patients-----along with Phentermine. Phentermine was never pulled. It is still prescribed in some states, I know it is in mine. If your looking for a serotonin drug...Prozac is alot safer than Pondium, in my opinion. | ||
