I have been with my girl for 1yr 9mths now, and I have become really close to her family, probably because I'm over there every day now. So my question is, she has a 7yr old brother who really looks up to me. Now thatI have started lifting, he wants to too. Will he be ok to do some really light lifting or should I tell him to wait until he is 12 or so. Thanks guys.

I think it would be okay, for him to do the basic stuff. Pushups, situps,ect... My dad made me do basic stuff for years, until i hit around 12years old. Then he aloud me to lift weights.

Like i said, he should stick to lifting his body weight, until he builds a foundation.

of course, advise him to do the simple exercises, pushups, situps, pullups, ect. I think that is how most of us started out when we were young. I think physically active individuals that get into exercise at a early age turn out to be more physically active and have a better built foundation when they grow older. I did gymnastics for about 3 years when I was about 7-10. I contribute my physique today to this.

Yup bsjohnston is right, don't let him pick up any kind of weight that he'll strain with for at least another 7-8 years, let him do bodyweight work, pushups pullups things like that, he can get some incredible results from just that.

At his age, he would be better off learning Karate, Kung Fu, Judo, some martial art or gymnastics to keep his flexibility and strenghten his muscle tone without impeding the his potential growth. I also feel like if you have 7 year old and you make him study math 2 hours a day until he's 12, he'll probably be pretty good at math, but lacking in a lot of other areas. In the scheme of things 7 years is still very much a baby. I don't think lifting for the sake of strengthening muscles is necessary until his hormone levels peak and his primary male pubertal traits begin. . .around 12-14. Until them keep him interested in sports and activity and by all means lifting his own weight. Pushups, situps and pull ups, running, climbing, biking. Finally, I think most of us here lift for the groupee chicks anyway, there just isn't that motivating factor at 7. LOL
