I tried to run, and I always get terrible shin splints, because of my weight I guess.
So, do any of the big guys here actually run?

Last spring while on a cutting cycle I did sprints. I read an article by Eddie Robinson and he said he does sprints, hits a heavy bag, and jumps rope while cutting. I did get down to an all time low BF, so there's something to it. However, I think that running for endurance is counterproductive to making gains.

I've never had them but a lot of my friends have. I teach martial arts as well as being a bodybuilder so I do some running but if I need to get fitter I prefer cycling (no impact)

Well I dont know what you mean by big guys, but I'm 5'6" and 200lbs and 6 months ago I started doing Interval training on a treadmill because I didnt like the way I feel during a cycle. I feel a 100% better now, I have good endurance and just generally feel better, I do only 20 minutes a day, 3-4 days a week, thats all thats necessary for my needs. The shin splints will go away eventually but they suck while you have them, try interval training though because you can walk in between the running.

I run...Always get shin splits at first but they go away after a while...Also depends on the quality of your shoes...In High School we ran on grass - Golf Courses.

It is the only way I lose fat.

Cycling is a no impact alternative, I dont do any cardio,
I feel I get enough from my work and my work out,
also I feel able to control my body fat with my diet, so until
I need to, I wont do cardio, it burns energy and muscle.

I'm 6ft3 260 and I run a lot if I'm not on a bulk cycle. Your shin splints will to away. Your just not used to running. Ibuprofen will help deal with them. Just gotta live with it for a while.

I'm 5' 11" 240 (down from 250) and I run/walk at least 3 times a week for 15-20 minutes after I lift. I also cycle (stationary) regularly in the a.m. If I don't do cardio, I feel like shit!

Amp, hillarious!!!

I do 30 minutes on the stair climber everyday, whether I am bulking or cutting. It is low impact, keeps your heart in shape and gets me loose for stretching before I work out. I suggest you start w/ 10min before you stretch and workout. . .as you get older like me it is a big help. . .
6'1" 240. . .

kodiak - you do 10 min. before and 20 min. after? or do you do the 20 min at a different time than your training? I've heard that you get better results from cardio if you don't do it right after training, but I don't have the time to go to the gym twice.

I love it & as alot of you know, the adrenaline rush from running can make it very addictive. You will eventually reach the point where you feel "down" if you dont run. I have to fight the urge to run almost everyday, because it is counterproductive to gains. That might explain why I'm still sort of a pussy : )

I personally think that cardio in general is a very UNDERESTIMATED mode of training and staying healthy, esp. on this board...without a strong heart and lungs, bug biceps won't do sh*t, except fill up the coffin sooner...just my 2 cents, I LOVE TO RUN!!

runing is a must when i dont run , i gain fat and water, nothing beats starting (and finishing) a day with runing.
my problem is i've got what's seems to be torn muscle (it's actually the musclr fascia wich is torn) in both my legs (it's permenant , and it's seems to be due to wrong runing habits during my time in the army).

All right, I'm going to go against the grain here and defy what is thought to be healthy habits. I used to be a run-aholic. I ran five days a week, five miles a day. I liked the rush it gave me. Eventually though I just got tired. My knees hurt and my lifting suffered...badly. Guess what....I couldn't gain for shit. So I thought to myself. Do I want to be a bodybuilder, a big mother f**ker, or do I want to be a marathon runner and look like some kenyan. I opted for the well nourished look of a bodybuilder. So I quit running. I replaced the time I used to run with walking. Fairly intensely, but nothing compared to running. Now at first I felt like shit. I was holding more water than a small lake(I don't sweat much at all unless I run). I felt lazy and unproductive, even undetermined. So I said to myself again...big mofo, or marathon runner. I adjusted within a month of quiting. The bloat went away and my lifts started improving. I also started to notice size gains occuring. Well, I started to get a little more confident about my decision now. So I decide to quit with the cardio all together...just to see what happens. I grew like a god damn weed. Strength was at an all time high and eventually so was confidence in my bodybuilding. Ironicaly I feel better now. I feel less tired and have a better sense of well being. My bodyfat has gone down and my apperance is at an all time best. I am able to manipulate my diet with pin-point precision so that has now become my weapon against unwanted fat. Now I do cardio once a week. I do that stair mill thing, where it's like walking up the down escalator. Mainly I just do it for my legs but it gets the heart pumping nicely. I feel better now and I look better. Body fat can be controled through diet alone. This I have learned to be the one thng you can count on in the world of bodybuilding. I don't want to be able to run a marathon nor do I need to. I wanted to be a Big mfer. Now, because I stopped running I am well on my way.

Heavy Squatting is just like doing sprints. I might do the eliptical stairstepper once a week for about 20-30 minutes. I try to control BF through diet and "supplements". I am currently in a bulking cycle 5"11 242 at 16% BF and I am not doing any cardio other than training.

No need to run when you can use DNP.
