Is it true insulin is only good for four weeks after you open it even if it's refrigerated? ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Never used insulin yet. While using the search I found a post saying it expired in that time. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yes I read the same thing, but it was only one post that claimed that. Was wondering what everyone else has experienced. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I will bump this. I am done with my short cycle of slin. It is 4 weeks old and I have not used much of my bottle at all. Don't want it to go to waste. Not refrigerated, but out of heat and sunlight totally. As I think about it...I bought my slin from a pharmacy, they took it out of the fridge and handed it to me. Does this mean that they have bottles go bad and they just throw it out? Surely it is more stable than that. Bump!!! B True ![]() ![]() ![]()

truth, I think it's fine until it's open. It's after it's opened I'm wondering about. I guess I could call a pharmacist and ask them. I order mine online. ------------------ [This message has been edited by slabcat (edited November 27, 2000).] ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

By saying "opened", do you mean the first time the needle goes into the little rubber stopper? It is still sealed, isn't it? Just wondering. B True ![]() ![]() ![]()

Just got off the phone with the pharmacist and she says that there's a date on the bottle and it's good through that date. I'll be getting my first bottle in a few days and will find out exactly how long that is. Hope it's longer than four weeks. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I bought mine in 10/00, and the exp date is 10/02. Expires in 2 years. Hope it lasts another couple of months out of the fridge. It is cheap enough though, but I wonder what would happen if it went bad. Maybe nothing, or maybe something bad. Anyone know? B True ![]() ![]() ![]()

The insulin is perfectly fine. While it is a protein which degrades eventually, four weeks is certainly of no concern. Especially if you are keeping it refridgerated. Because it is cheap however, I wouldn't keep using it much past a year though (although you will probably use it up by then). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Since i did an overkill of research on insulin before i started using it, I can tell you this much. It has an expiration date on it that it is good until as long as it is refrigerated. It will only last 28days if stored at room temperature, then it must be replaced. this is key for people who do not have a refrig in there room like I do, trying to explain to their mother why i'd be taking insulin is not preferable. I do however have a small refrig from college that is ideal. A pharmacy could not replace each bottle of insulin after 28days...did you ever see how many boxes are in that thing. Also, it would say somewhere in the paperwork that it is no good after 28 if kept refrierated and it doesn't, it just says o not let freeze or go above a certaoin temp. You should be fine. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Good for two years if kept at the correct temp. Also contains an antibacterial agent. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I asked exactly the same question on this site a few months ago and got told that it has an expirey date but once opened it is only supposed to last 28 days. Apparently some of the boxes by Lilly do state this I was told. However like myself, most people will only buy one amp at at time as that is usually enough for a course, so may never even see a box. I was also told that the manufacturer was probably just covering their ass by saying 28 days which is probably a minimum figure and that if its kept in a fridge it'd probably be good for about 5 weeks. That way if it was administered to a diabetic and had stopped working they'd have a bigger safety net for a potential law suite. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
