I was maxing on flat bench and I got a shock through my arm with a sharp pain in the back of my shoulder. I worked through a few more sets with pain in every rep. I stopped and did 30 mins of cardio. By the time I was done the back of my shoulder was throbbing and the pain went through my entire arm. I am going to the docs tomorrow. I took 4 advil and iced. I also applied a ice gel for pain.

Anybody with similar pain that can tell me if its a tear or just a strain???

I am just recovering from a shoulder injury from 2 weeks ago. Some of the worst pain I have had in my life. Doc said he thought that I tore my rotator cuff. But just found out today that it is not torn. It took that long to find out because he said I had to heal up alot before he could tell. I hope your ok.

A friend of mine tore a rotator cuff muscle a about a year ago and he said the pain was so intense he could't even lift his arm. I think if you were able to still work through another set or two it's probably a severe sprain or strain, but not a tear. You'll be able to tell in a day or so if you can't move your arm without experiencing a lot of pain. Good luck bro, don't go back to training too soon!

Its been 4 hrs and I have more motion, but it still hurts pretty bad. I'm going to the doc tomorrow anyway. He might give me some anti-inflamatories. I hope its not a tear, because I would be out for about a year from serious training.

I tore a rotator cuff years ago and it still bothers me every day.

I was thinking about trying one of those shoulder horn things. Has anyone tried one of those to strengthen the rotator cuff?

I think Elite needs to start a shoulder injury board...there seem to be enough of us to keep it going.

Seriously, I have a chronic shoulder injury that is probably mild compared to what some of you have experienced. Even a mild injury can stop your progress dead however.

I have gotten stronger on every lift except bench and incline in the last two months. My bench and incline have dropped because of the shoulder. Really depressing....

I recently stopped all lifts for 4 weeks that even remotely hurt my shoulder (Bench, Incline, Military...even heavy shrugs are out)

I also got a shoulder horn. I looks kind of goofy, but man does it isolate the external rotation muscles. I can already feel a difference...and that is encouraging.

A couple of suggestions...DO NOT let a Doc shoot you up with cortisone. When I first went in the guy whipped out a big syringe and I said cool. I kind of like needles in joints. But now I wished I had not let him shoot me up. My shoulder hurts in a whole different way now, and feels weaker. That is one of the reasons I took off 4 weeks.

Also consider limiting range of motion on presses to where you shoulder naturally wants to stop. With a bar, this means stop the bar 3-4 inches above chest. You can still use normal for once in a while (maxing out, etc) but don't do it every time. Your shoulder was not meant to take that stress in a position which has the joint capsule pulled open.

Here's to all of us getting better!

tough it out, i seperated my shoulder severely a couple years ago, lift hard and as it gets stronger again the pain will go away, maybe the same results dont apply to everyone but it worked for me, and chiropractors 9 times out of 10 dont know sh#t!
