Ordered @home(cable modem) not too long ago. The guy came over to install it, I tried to avoid him going into the email(I have my email accounts for my site set up there www.steroidworld.com), but he went there anyways to set up the @home email. I didn't think it was a big deal, and didn't think he would think anything of it. Anyways, a few days after it was installed I was having problems. I phoned the cable comp. and told them that I'm having problems. They tell me to d/l the newest updates, etc., and if it doesn't help, phone them back. Well a few days after that they phone me. They said they would like to send an 'inspector' over to check out all the connections. He said it was "voluntary" and it was required. He sounded very suspicious, for the fact that THEY phoned me, and how he said it was "voluntary", and just the whole conversation. Anyway, I made an appointment for this wednesday coming up. After thinking about it over the weekend, I thought it would be best to cancel the appointment and live with any problems I'm having, or try and fix them myself. So... Monday morning(today), I phone the cable company, and tell them I would like to cancel my appointment. Gave my name, address, and whatever. The lady says there is nothing booked for me. They have no appointments or anything coming on wednesday. Now maybe I'm a bit paranoid, but now I'm convinced even more what I thought in the beginning, a cop is coming over to check out what's going on. For a cop to come into your house without a search warrant, it has to be "voluntary". ------------------     | ||

Sounds fishy but probably just paranoid, clean house anyways and put it soemplace safe, for a little while. Probably nothing to worry about. Good board btw!  Slopain | ||

Would also like to note that when we were booking the appointment, they tried to book it ASAP, usually it takes atleat 5 days to book an appointment. And they gave the time of 1:00. When they usually make an appointment they will say, "Someone will be there between 12:00 - 4:00, not a specific time. Slopain: You guys make it successful. | ||

Sounds fucking fishy to me. Get rid of your CPU for that day and tell them that you have it at the shop for servicing. It is the cable modem that is the problem anyway. Don't let the fuckers anywhere near your house!!! | ||

Law enforcement officals cannot come into your home without your permission or a warrant. They cannot pose as a cable company or anything else to bypass this. | ||

if they show up, tell them that you got a friend to fix the problem so everything is cool now. They don't have to do anything, if they insist on coming in, well they need a search warrant. | ||

if u're so worried about your comp (and unless u have some sort of record of ordering gear on it), just open it up take thehard disk out and give it to a friend. it sounds to strange ,i think u're a lil paranoid, but than again better safe than sorry. | ||

Ask for his ID if he shows up at your house. When he hands you his ID, make him wait outside & tell him your going to call the cable company to confirm that he is in fact a Cable company employee. He can't say shit about this because thats what cops tell us (the public) to do to protect ourselves from intruders. Then even if he is a cop & this makes it to court, the judge will laugh his ass out of court because he entered your house under false pretenses! Which anyone that knows the law is a BIG no no. One last note, when cops do serve a warrant they MUST tell you they are searching your house & what they are searching for, anything found illegal not on the warrant cannot be used against you!
