Hey guys, does anyone on the board still do deadlifts? Alot of the guys at my gym shy away from. They always complain of getting a big waist. I absolutely love them!! Probably, the second best exercise for getting big. Oh well,I'll just keep getting bigger. While they stay small. THE PROTOTYPE

I see the asswipe 00000 is still with us.
Yes, I still do them about 6 months out of the year when bulking up and nothing works better for overall mass in my book.

Religiously. I have found in my gym(and I'm assuming this is true in all "real" gyms) these are what separate the men from the boys. The hardcores from the wanna be's. The monsters from the pretty boys. If you are worried about breaking a nail then I guess you have a legitamate excuse for not doing them. Otherwise, deadlift till you feel like you are about to black out...then do one more so you do.

Beez...I agree. Are we including heavy stiff-legged deadlifts in this same catagory. Personally, I seem to work more muscles with this excersize. My rear traps are always sore the next day as well as my hamstrings, which is what I do them for.

Yeah, still deadlift here.
THE DEADLIFT
by Richard W. Field

In a dusty little room
dank and dark
lies the test of strength
simple and stark.

A bar so stacked with plates
of steel
for a man to lift it seems so
unreal.

A trial so basic and brutal is
true
that it's turned the faces of
strongmen blue.

Shunned by the masses who
train without pain
the deadlift shares groaning
as an intimate strain.

Only a few take the challenge
and fewer succeed
ascending the ranks of an elite
breed.

For those who move the
weight from the floor
learn a little of life
and of themselves much
more.

Milo October 1996, Vol. 4, No. 3

Great poem b fold, thanks!

I loooooooove deadlifts, they are my absolute favorite lift... Not even squats require the same mental focus and crazy intensity.

And my back/glutes/hams thank me for doin 'em!

I feel for upper back thickness and size doing rack deadlifts (from mid shin to just under the knee) are along with reverse grip bent over rows the TWO key exercises for you to do.
I like floor deads and at on time before injuries set in I was able to do 500x14,585x8, and 605x5 all without straps or a BELT. On rack deads I did 700x11 after I did the 500x14. I still have traps although I dont even do racks much anymore (But will soon)
Floor deads will hit your hams and glutes alot more. Also rack deads are alot safer because they allow you to keep a tighter back. In short rack deads rule.

It's true that a lot of guys, most in fact, don't do deadlifts. They don't do squats, either. Which is pretty crazy, since two of the most fundamental lifts for overall strength and mass building are, you guessed it, deads and squats. The bench press stations are all stacked with guys five deep waiting to work in while, over at the squat rack and deadlift rack, the cobwebs are gathering. Go figure.

I have a "bad back," and have to be careful when doing deads, so I do mostly sumo-style deads, and I don't generally go above 350# or so. But I always do them on leg day, alternating with squats, and wouldn't give them up for anything. Guys who claim they can't do them because of back problems, just like guys who say they can't do squats because they don't want to fuck up their kness, are pussies, IMO.

For anyone motivated to take up Deadlifts by this thread. START LIGHT! These guys have been in the game awhile and know thier shit. I love deads. Do em' every back day. But when I've been off for a while I start light again. Just to be safe.

i agree with bjaarki for the most part.
i have lower back problems and it is hard to deadlift. i used to do them every back day and it was awesome. now with the bad back i do them every other back day and usually dont go much over 315. as for squats, i have discovered doing smith machine squats with the feet out in front a little takes all the preasure off the back and still destroys the quads. injuries suck, you just have to work around them. to be big you must squat and you sould definetly deadlift.
