Damn, I thought I had this shoulder problem whipped. This sucks! Lately (last 3 weeks) my right arm always fails first on DB pressing motions...and I am right handed. It is wierd, but when one arm fails 1st (with DB's) you will automatically slow down the other and not really notice that one arm is MUCH stronger! My right shoulder pain is not bad, but it is persistent. So I went and saw the doc. He took an XRay...said I have mild rot cuff problem...and stop doing what hurts it. DUH! Told me that the weakness is because the rot cuff tears keep you from using the full length of certain muscles. Then he shot me up with cortisone and told me to take it easy for a while. Gave me some Celebrex, Vioxx and Ultram to try (not all at once of course) Now I know that Cortisone is NO solution as it softens stuff up in there. But I am going to take advantage of what the Cortisone will do and try to take it easy for a while (2-3 weeks) My question is how do I keep from going too far backwards? Should I drop EVERY excercise that hurts my shoulder in any manner? Should I just drop weight way down and go to high reps just to keep from going backwards. The one lift I will drop completely is Flat (DB) bench. I think I will do decline DB with parallel grip instead....they are easy on shoulder and still do something for your chest. I also ordered a Shoulder Horn, and should have it next week. Overall this is a very minor problem compared to what some of you have gone through, but it has me stuck in place. I know I must let it recover then start over before it becomes serious. I guess I need to make a better effort to strengthen the stabilizing muscles in my shoulder. Any further advice is appreciated! ![]() ![]() ![]()

Do lots of warm ups, light rotator cuff exercises(with the lightest dumbells in the gym), and stay away from anything that hurts it. Remember that the more often you agitate it, the longer it will take to heal. B True ![]() ![]() ![]()

Scooter, I have been there and you will eventually have to have your shoulder scoped and cleaned. This will not go away. What you have written here could be my diary from 5 years ago. Yes you can go down in weight to take the pressure off the joint and still work the muscle. But you will go down again and again everytime your muscle strength matches the weight you go down to. It never ends you will just keep going down. It sucks but you have to bite the bullet and get it scoped. Get a better doctor to look at an MRI. You can waste a lot of time with a doctor who doesn't understand what you are doing, I wasted 3 years. Really. Find the best guy in town and go see him. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Bro I had shoulder surgery about 10 wks ago to remove a bone spur and torn cartilage (labrum). I agree with Ulter, you need to find a new Doc. You should have had an MRI and I HATE cortizone. Cortizone is just a temorary solution that will WEAKEN your existing problem. Go get an MRI and get the best doc that you can find. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks for the replies. The doc I saw is very good, but you are correct, he is not really a sports minded guy and dosn't understand what its all about. He did say that shoulder surgeries were among the most unreliable procedures (relative to knee, hip surgeries, etc) because the shoulder is such a complicated joint. My problem is there is probably no Doc who would cut my shoulder....it is just not that bad...YET. But like the rest of you, I always want to grab that next heavier weight, so it will get worse... I guess I won't know until I find another Doc and ask. I know of a really good Ortho in Stockton, CA who has done lots of knees, etc for NFL, MLB guys. I will try and get in there and see where I can go. ![]() ![]() ![]()

Yes your doc is a fool, now do light shoulder rotations, external, internal, shoulder horn etc etc, no static stretching on your shoulders, make sure to warm them up properly before every workout. I spend 20 mins before every workout warming up my shoulders. ------------------ ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks E2. I recalled in some of your archived posts that you had some serious shoulder probs.
Can you elaborate on "no static stretching" Also, how often can you do rot cuff excercises? I have heard from 2x per week up to "every day" (LIGHT Weight of course...20+ reps per set) Thanks! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
