I have a story for you guys..I use to have the same workout partner for a while, and he was a great spotter. You know the type.. the ones who encourage you and push you. Well, I always lifted heavy when I lifted with him. I have been lifting by myself recently and I grab a spotter from just any ol joe in the gym. Well, today I had the worst spotter in the world. I was doing benchpress, I had 275 loaded on there and the guy gives me a lift off and just steps back and watches me. Well, as you should know, it really helps you if the person has their hands under the bar encouraging you the whole way.. well needless to say I only repped 275 like 5 times and thats all I could do.. Well, one of the "big guys" in the gym came over to spot me when I loaded 305 on the bar and he was talking about how sorry that guy was spotting me.. He really siked me up and put his hands under the bar and went down w/ me and came up w/ me the whole way, talking to me and stuff... well I repped 305 the same amount of reps as I did 275 when the other dude was spotting me. So if u are one of those bros who stands back and watches your partner do the weight.. PLEASE STOP, I can't stand that!!!!! Help them and encourage them, trust me, you'll move up much faster!

I don't like people touching the bar unless it is on my throat. I do not have a spotter and have not had one in years, but I ask the trainers to spot me on my heavy sets. I tell them how to spot me before we begin so there is no confusion.

2Thick...I like you, man....Everyone someone touches that motherfreakin' Bar they are stealing from you...Taking away a tad bit of strength you would have gain from doing it yourself. Keep your hands off the GODD*M BAR!!!! or I will bite it OFF!!! I still think it is important to have one, though...you just have to have one that is hardcore as you. that is one hard thing to find....GET BIG OR GET TO THE BACK!!!! ------------------

Spunky, no offense but who cares how many reps you can do and with what weight when someone's hands are on the bar. I will not allow someone to lie to me and tell me that it is all me. Weight is a measure we use to gauge our progress, how can we measure when someone is picking up on the bar??? Do yourself a favor and revaluate your philosophy. This is coming from a very competitive strength athlete, which was given to me in turn by one.

I agree with everyone..the odd time a get a spotter on benches I just grab anyone and tell them how many reps I'll go for and not to touch the bar unless it's crushing my chest..they automatically help the moment they see me struggling..arghh..like the one bro said, someone is stealing that rep from you.

i agree i get mad if some one touches the bar when im benchpress or anything else .but i think part of what spunky was saying is that u get mentaly dependent on your partner and dont lift as well when he is not around.ive had a partner for 8 monthes and he just broke his hand and know he is in jail.u get used 2 lifting with people i think it helps 2 have a parter but when it comes down 2 it u need 2 do it for yourself and if your partner is there good if not 2bad.

I fingures about 1/2 inch below the bar, not touching it. [This message has been edited by filo (edited November 04, 2000).]

I said the guy puts his hands UNDER the bar if u read my post again..He didn't touch the bar. He had his hands under the bar, so for some reason I lift more. I guess my subconcious thinks he's helping me or something. But I trust this guy, he wouldn't cheat me, he said he never touched the bar until the last rep when I struggled. When did i say the guy had his hands on the bar??? ugh..

I didn't mean to offend (if you were thinking that). I just don't like it when anyone is near the bar. It is my personal preference. I once had a great partner but he went his way and I went mine, so I depend on myself (but I pushed myself a bit harder with him around).

No, no offense taken.. but everyone seemed to think the guy had his hands on the bar... Oh well.. Basically what im saying is I lift alot stronger and push myself alot harder if I have a good spotter/workout partner. I've been working solo for too long because me and my old partner have conflicting schedules now....... I need to find a new one.

When somebody asks me for a spot, I always ask them how they want me to spot them. And when I ask for a spot I explain exactly how I want to be spotted. And then you have those guys who use terrible form, arch their back, bounce the bar off their chest etc. I tell those guys straight up I won't spot them unless they lower the weight and use a weight that they can control.Manana....

I train with my girlfriend and I believe she pushes me harder than I would alone. Having a spotter can be a great asset and allow you to get that last rep that you would have never got alone. I couldn't imagine training without her...

I never have a spotter. I use a power rack. I DO HAVE A GOOD STORY!!! A good friend of mine was squatting in the gym a while back and was about to do his heavy set. He asked another one of my friends to spot him. He chose this person because the rest of us were busy working out and this guy played football in High School and my buddy thought that this guy could surely spot him correctly. My friend went to squatting, after about 4 or 5 reps...he realized that he was not going to be able to get the next one completely on his own so he warned his spotter after a few deep breaths. He went down, to the floor as usual, and got back up to about paralell and his spotter stuck his hands under his butt and began to spot him that way. He grabbed his butt and tried to lift him up from a squat with his hands. My buddy, totally shocked that this dude had grabbed his butt, fell over foreward into the rack and turned around and chewed his spotter out. We all laughed so hard that we had to go outside not to embarrass either one of the guys involved. Was one of the funniest things I have ever seen. B True

When the bars heading back down to cut me in half and there is nothing i can do about it, then it's time for a spot. Other than that, he'd better be standing away with his HANDS OFF screaming some encouragement ------------------

I'm with the majority of people on this board...help me unrack it then step away.... The problem with spotters you don't know is that they are used to spotting there buds who throw on 315 for bench and even though they can't get 1 rep on there own there buddy helps him sqeeze out 6 reps. Then they take that mentality to spotting you and assuming you'll need help on every rep.

I knew a little guy who could do 315 on the bench 9 times with no spotter. I asked him why he never had one (not even anyone close by when he lifted) and his philosophy was "It helps me get the weight up because I know damn well that no one is there to save me". I don't know if his way was the right way for me, but then again he weighed 165 and I damn sure wasn't doing that kind of weight/reps when I was 165, so I gotta hand it to him nevertheless...

I hate those people that help out a little TOO MUCH when you are straining to get that last rep in. I tell them to let me fight that last rep (10-15 seconds), but most never listen.

That was a funny story about the butt grabbing...ha!Ha! But I agree with E2...Don't touch unless I ask or it is on the way down. No offense meant but I lift by myself most of the time unless it is a new plateau...say for instance my Max is on bench is 375lbs(2reps)...Well If I was going to increase my max I would get a spot to move up to 385lbs..and try it until I could do it for 2reps...I mean the important thing is to know your body...But I prefer I either do the weight or DIE TRYING!!! ------------------ My battle cry will always be..."ONE MORE GODD*AM REP!!!!AAARRRGGGGHHH!!!

Only way to run in the gym is a solo mission. Also people tell me when I am at the gym it looks like I have an attitude. I guess that is why I still run solo. Had a partner at one time, but that lack of intrest in keeping his body in shape was bringing me down also. No one needs a partner like that. With one like that better to run solo. |
