hey flex, i have the same problem bad right shoulder. try using the smith machine for flat bench and for half of the sets and on the heavy sets dont let your upper arm drop below parallel. this will help build your chest with less tension on your shoulder so all in all you will be able to do more sets. i followed this strict for about 3 months and last friday got up my personal best 405 x2 and 1 forced with help. and that was off gear. Hey bros. Using smith machine for flat bench is a lousy idea (none of what I say here is intended as flame), since flat bench is a naturally "J" shaped lift and the smith machine prevents normal (good) joint mechanics. There are too many things that can go wrong with a shoulder (torn labrum, soft tissue inpingement, AC dysfuntion, tendonitis, rotator tear, etc) to say that a single cortisone shot will sort stuff out; usually I don't like cortisone because of the tissue-breakdown effects (although those are mild in the short term). If you are juicing, then using lighter weight will still add mass. Tell more about your symptoms and I'll tell what I think. Peace!

I WILL TELL YOU WAHT I THINK... I HAVE TWO TORN CUFFS, SO NEEDLESS TO SAY THEY HURT OFTEN.

AVOID FLAT BENCH ALTOGETHER, ITS OVER RATED AND YIELDS LOW RESULTS COMPARED TO OTHER CHEST BLASTERS... USE D.B'S AS YOUR MAIN STAPLE... DB INCLINES, DECLINES, FLIES... USE CABLES... DONT PUT YOUR ARM IN A POSITION THAT IS GOING TO STRAIN THAT SHOULDER TOO MUCH...

AS FOR DOING SHOULDERS, AGAIN, FIND WHAT EXERCISES WORK WITHOUT THE BAD PAIN. YOU DONT HAVE TO USE HEAVY WEIGHT TO GET BIG, THATS A MYTH... SOME PEOPLE DO GREAT PUMPING BEYOND BELIEF, OTHERS MAX OUT CONSTANTLY. GIVE THE PUMP A SHOT, IF YOU WORK IT HARD ENOUGH YOU WILL GROW. REMEMBER, THE HEAVY WEIGHTS ARE GOING TO HELP MORE WITH STRENGTH THEN WITH SIZE...

Improve your flat bench form.
Do rotator cuff exercises and shoulder warm up before chest, shoulders, and back.
Work as hard as YOU can.

I had the same problem, I warm up shoulders for 10 minutes with dumbells before I even start chest, then I start with Incline barbell press, then Incline dumbell press, then flat bench, then maybe flyes, my shoulders have been fine. If I am off cycle I cannot do that I have to go light, my joints just are not lubricated enough. I can barely bench press at all.

go with the rotator cuff exercises.
this really helps your shoulder joints.
if any ball players out there, you know
what i'm talking about.

Flex, I have chronically sore shoulders and didnt want to give up heavy lifting. Guess what? I didnt! I use a swiss ball for my chest DB presses and for my shoulder DB presses and my chest is a big as ever! Email me if you'd like for some tips. Despite what some people are going to say about my use of the ball it WILL MAKE YOU FUCKING GROW.I just did 150's for 3 sets of six and failed out on the 5th rep (lockout) on the fourth. I used 80lb'ers for shoulder presses while unsuported on the ball. I almost gave up lifting alltogether-needless to say I'm glad I didn't.

I have right rotator problem also. Always hurts when I go heavy for long periods on flat bench. This has happened many times and the only things that helps is doing dumbells instead of barbells. For me anyways.

Once I hit a plateau I drop they weight down to about 50% of what I was using and concentrate stricly on feeling the muscle. I will do 2-4 exercises per bodypart very slowly and really feeling the tension. I will do 1 plate a side for bench for 10 reps by the second set my pump is so great I can barely push anymore. I do this for a couple weeks. I wouldn't suggest doing it for too long because you will loose strength and probably some size in the long run.

Just my .2 cents.

Works for me doesn't necessarily mean it will work for you

Go get a cortizone shot in your shoulder and you'll feel better in two or three days.

If your shoulder hurts then stop lifting until it gets better. It is that simple.

I took 2 months off once because I had a tiny dull pain at my shoulder joint.

I am not risking a life-long injury just to avoid a few months of rest.

sorry rainhorn, but i had a cortisone injection and all i can say is; DON'T DO IT.
It simply is not worth it. And i had 3 of those in the elbow also. My best bet is : train around the injury.

The swiss ball is a fine idea, I use it in my own training, training others, and in clinical practice. I'm all about using dumbells in place of barbell (since I'm not a powerlifter) since it allows better joint mechanics. Since I don't completely approve of cortisone, but it is important to relieve the inflammation, use ibuprofen (motrin) up to 2000mg/day to relieve the pain. I agree that there are plenty of exercises besides flat bench that can blast your chest out. Work your external rotator muscles regularly, holding your arms abducted at 90 degrees in the plane of scaption. Glucosamine is good stuff. Sometimes I think that all one has to do to gain muscle while juicing is to get blood pumping to it... Resting around the injury makes some sense, but it's one of those personal choices. Best wishes. Peace!
