Yep, saturated fat my friend! I think, not real sure, most vegatarians don't eat snack foods so that kills alot of calories, I acually think it was to do wiht lower calorie consumption.

I was a vegatarian for 4 years, I still ate cheese but thats it, no milk, eggs mabye once a year. not a pure vegan

It was kind of fun since I were differnt than everyone else.

I turned vegatarian because I read about where meat gets it's flavor from....it's fecal matter!

But hell it is cooked so I don't give a damn no more, oh if I think about meat coming from animals it makes it much harder for me to swallow, especially when I visualize a cow being killed by way a blade cutting it's jugeular and blood gushing out.

I used to eat 80% carbs 15% protein and 5% fat when I was a vagatarian and I was a twig!

If you ever stop eating meat for a good period of time and you start up again, you will not be a happy camper!!!!!!!

SO IF YOU ARE A VEGATARIN NEVER START EATING MEAT ON A REGULAR BASIS.

I WENT THOUGH SOME MASSIVE WEIGHT GAIN AND EXPLOSIVE DIARRIA AND CRAMPS AND NASEU WHEN I STARTERD EATING MEAt agaij

You don't know any fat vegetarians? Strange.....

My friends and I had a discussion a long time ago that was centered around the ketogenic diet. We got sidetracked and ended up talking about all of our fat vegetarian friends....there are ALOT. Young vegetarians eat potato chips, french fries, bread, etc. as meals. Those trans fatty acids are much worse for you than saturated animal fats. Trans fatty acids have been linked to everything from premature aging to cancer. They do not exist in nature....only in the "cis" isomer. Their artificial nature makes them a form of carcinogen.

a couple of friends of mine have been vegetarians pretty much all their lives, they are in their 40's now. They rely alot on cheeses, and pastas. They are both overweight.

Whether you are gonna be overweight or not as a vegetarian depends on what kinds of foods you eat and the amount of excercise you get.

This is just my opinion as a 10year lacto-vegetarian. Most vegetarians are more health consious, they make wiser food choices, avoiding simple carbs and eating lower fat and cholesterol foods.

BTW The reason you got cramps from eating meat again is because the Man was originally a vegetarian, our digestive tract was not made to eat meat. When it was slowly introduced into the diet we were able to digest it.

Meat is actually very hard on your digestive tract, it stays in there ten times longer than vegetables.

aky, just my 2cents but I think eggs are somewhat overated. One egg white has only 3 grams of protein. the yolk has 3 grams also, but there's only a certain amount of cholesterol your arteries can handle. so, for just a 30 gram serving of protein, you're gonna have to crack open 10 egg whites. a cup of cottage cheese will give you thirty grams and is much easier to eat for me. also, keep eating beans and lentils as a vegetarian.

Aky,

Eggs have one of the highest bio-availability ratings of any protein, and whats this white shit??...Eat the whole damn thing, hell I eat 10 every friggin morning.

And if you decide to eat meat, carve into a huge top sirloin my friend, and get it rare..afterwards...sop up the blood with your role...god you feel like a GOD..

Note: no vegetarians were harmed in the making of this thread.

Vegetarianism in the US tends to be due to two reasons: moral or fashion. I agree with the moral stance...if you believe this then you have every right to live this way. The latter makes me sick.

The moral vegetarians tend to be the lean ones, from my experience, due to better choices in foods...less refined grains, legumes, proper protein combinations, etc. The fashion vegetarians tend to just eat shit as long as it is not made with animal products...at least in public. I have known some "vegans" who have a pound of groundmeat hidden in the freezer.

Also, if one eats too low a protein diet, less than 10% quality protein, then they tend to become hypermetabolic. Numerous studies show that low protein increases thermogenesis through increase in T3 levels and a reduction in insulin function.

As for the idea that man was "made" to be vegetarian, I have to disagree. With our canines and long digestive tracts, we have perfect design to be omnivorous. Protein meals stay in the GI longer for a reason, it simply takes longer for protein digestion and assimilation to occur...it is simply a matter of biochemistry. Fat stays in the GI for a long time also, were we not made to eat fats?

cockdezl We are not designed to be meat eaters. If you think you have canines that are designed for meat why don't you use them for that. BECAUSE YOU COOK YOUR MEAT. How long do you suppose that long digestive tract would last if you didn't.

If you look at it from an ecologists point of view, he/she would say that we are designed to be meat eaters. Our eyes face forward like that of the lion, hawk, or any other meat-eating predator. The forward eye placement allows us to pay attention to detail when chasing our prey. Natural vegetarians tend to have their eyes on the sides of their head like the rabbit or elk. It is so they can see in almost a 360 degree range to see flickers of movement by a predator.

aky, i fired an email at you. please reply.

bchemist, i will have to disagree with you on your last point. the presence of eyes at the forefront of our skulls is a result of the evolutionary pressures on our ancestors which were monkeys. these animals did not require eyes to track their prey as they were vegetarians, as a result, no evolutionary stress favoured them to have eyes on the front in regards to locating food, as opposed to other reasons which are plausible, such as watching for predators. it was after the evolution from ape to man that we began to consume meat.

One of the most dramatic displays of hunting I have ever seen was done by the chimpanzee (mans closet cousin) on the Discovery channel about three years ago. They form hunting parties to catch smaller spider monkeys. There are 3-4 chasers who drive the spider monkey toward a blocker who is waiting in ambush. And while all this is happening, there is another spotter who runs underneath the action up-above, should the spider monkey drop from the trees or fall. They then share the meat amongst themselves after the kill.
