Bro's,

My lower back always hurt when I perform deadlifts. At first, I did have incorrect form. I did some research and practiced to get the right form, but my back still hurts. Lately, ive been substiting deads with hamstring curls, but i want to find a compound type movement that works the like the deadlift. I know nothing can replace the dead, but I want an alternate. Any Ideas?

Nothing will replace deads..stick with the deads but use lighter weight and more reps. Most of the lifters that I know that have back pain from DLing have backs that are weak , throw in some stifflegs or Romanian DL's after deads and you should see some improvement...

You have to remember (and I am in no way an Exercise Physiologist, Sports Medicine Doctor, etc.) that deadlifts "stress" your lower back, which makes it grow and strengthen. However, one must also "train" the lower back. Try doing 1 arm/opposite leg raises, lying on your stomach, keeping your torso--middle--on the ground. It's akward at first, but the more flexible you become, the more you feel it! I'd also suggest doing some hyperextensions (which are biomechanically for the hams and NOT the lower back!), and more ab work. Without a balance of muscle between the abs and lower back, the body must compensate, which can cause serious problems! Hope some of this helps, bro, e-mail me if I was foggy on anything! I've also heard the "reverse-hypers" are f*ckin' killers...
