This past weekend I suffered an a/c sparation of the shoulder while playing football. I was planning to do a cycle in a couple weeks, but now it will have to wait. Have any of you guys suffered this injury, and if you have, how did you speed the healing process? My physician has told me it will take 4-6 months to heal. It will kill me to wait that long to resume training. Any advice is appreciated.

I had surgery on my shoulder seven weeks ago and I am starting to lift light again, I doubt it would take you 6 months.
My friend separated his shoulder about a month ago and he is already DB pressing the 65lbs. He has some pain though. Just take it slow and you will be back before you know it

Mickey, what type of surgery did you have? I've had a total of 4 shoulder surgeries and it is absolutely impossible to be lifting waits in 7 weeks, unless you are talking about extremely light weights. If you rush it you WILL end up in the hospital again, trust me I know.

Gary, I too originally hurt my shoulder from playing football. I did not take anytime off. I didn't practice all week but still played in the games. I bought a shoulder harness and whenever my shoulder popped out someone in the huddle would put it back in. Needless to say, I was stupid. After the season I finally got an MRI and just about everything in which you could tear in your shoulder was torn. Now, after surgery you can get back into the gym at 3 month using light weights. You should be totally healed after 6 months. If all you did was separate your shoulder and you didn't tear anything, the best thing to do is rest your arm for a week or 2, do not do anything to strain the ligaments or tendons in your shoulder so that they have a chance to heal and shrink a little bit. Your physical therapist should give you several exercises to strengthen your shoulder without further hurting it.

To summ it up, if it was just a separation with no internal damage, with the correct physical therapy you'll be back in action in a couple of weeks. I suggest getting an MRI.

I just came back from the doc with the same diagnosis. Because this is a connective tissue injury the options for rehab are little to none. Odds are any type of excessive load is going to cause irritation and the subsequent inflamation. Unfortunately you will now always be prone to pain in that shoulder. Dont rush it.

EL Cubano: I had arthroscopic sugery to repair torn cartilage (labrum) and shave a bone spur. It has been 7.5 weeks since my surgery. I am playing basketball (did last week and tonite) and lifting again LIGHT. I mean like 40lb db chest presses. I have been working very hard to make my shoulder stronger, doing every exercise that my doc told me to do religiously. He said that I would be lifting light in 6 weeks, it took me 7.

Take the time off, work your legs. I had a similar problem and came back to fast. Set myself back a few months. Lift slowly with light weight when you're ready and before you know it you'll be back. GL

Lifting (decent) weight is not going to speed up recovery with acromioclavicular separation. If it is a 3rd degree rupture, then 4 months is optimistic. Settle for lifting your glass of milk bro. Anything more is counterproductive. Let that sucker heal. Peace!
