Is it ok to NOT refrigerate insulin? How long can it go without refrigeration and not go bad? I'm talking humalin R.

I know it's ok to take it to the gym, but I mean in terms of days.

Agreed, check out a PDR and read the manufacturers recomendations for storage. Im guessing it will be fine for several days. I dont beleive that it is unstable at RT, rather the four degree storage just slows the possibility of bacterial growth.

I live in Hong Kong and the pharmacists here are not very professional. The answer I got was that its ok not to refrigerate it in the short term but in the long term it's not ok. However, he can't give me a time period for which its ok. I asked another pharmacist and he said that I can travel with it as long as its not exposed to heat. The box itself says it should be refrigerated but they always say the safest thing on the box.

So whats the real deal? I can't keep anything in the family refrigerator.

And would you please tell me where to find the reference that it is ok to not refrigerate for 28 days? That would help a lot.

Thanks!

I can personally tell you that I used Humulin R synthetic insulin and the insert said it can be kept at room temperature for 28 days.

If kept referigerated it can be kept like a year...

Are there different manufacturers for humalin R? Because I live in Hong Kong I am wodering if it is a different manufacturer because our inserts do not mention the 28 days thing.

Also how about humalog. Does that keep for long without refrigeration?

Does that mean it slowly deteriorates over 30 days? I mean I'm sure it doesn't stay 100% for 30 days and then BANG go bad. It probably is gradual. I'm worried whether at the 30 mark it is, say only 50% effective etc. After 30 days, what condition would it be in?

I've had mine for a couple of months now, refrigerated on and off. I think I'll throw mine out now, even though the solution is clear as when I first got it.

All i know is my uncle needs insulin to survive and he keeps it in the frig. so i would say it does not effect it or else he would be in a insulin induced coma.

What was that? Twisted. Your uncle needs insulin to survive, so why would be be in a coma if he was to take good insulin that worked? Also, you say he keeps it in the fridge, but then you say that that makes it ok to not refrigerate....

I don't really understand your post. Aren't those things contradictory?
