It only hurts at the beginning of the concentric part of the lift. It does not hurt on the eccentric part at all. It mainly hurts when doing incline bench and heavy bench. Also, I can not even do military or dumbbell shoulder presses, but I can do dumbbell side laterals. I have been taking 1000 mg. of Naprosyn for the last week, and it does not seem to be helping at all. Also, I have been lowering the load on the shoulder exercises, with little or none done at all. I hate doing light weight when bulking, but this is mainly all I can do. What the hell is wrong with me? And, What kind of specialist should I see to find out what is wrong? Any info would be greatly appreciated here. Thanks.

Hey bro, I'd contact a doctor with an orthopedic specialty, or possibly one in sports medicine. I prefer DO over MD, since DO tends to emphasize physical medicine moreso than MD, which emphasizes pharmacology more. You will need some diagnostics, starting with x-rays. Don't be suprised when the x-rays don't indicate anything, but you'll need the x-rays before they'll order an MRI. Once you get the MRI you will have a much better idea what's up. It could be any number of things; tendonitis, labral tear, rotator cuff strain, muscular impingement etc. Request physical therapy, since a good PT eval will be more thorough and diagnostic than what a doctor can do. Consider requesting TENS for the pain. Hope it helps bro. Peace!

Atlas' reply is sound, take it. I won't bore you with details but I was/am in a similar situation. Diagnosis in my case, acute tendonitus (snaps, pops, and hurts like a B*&$#). Treatment plan: Phys. therapy which has resulted in zero success (for me). I work-around it to the best of my ability and adjustments I have made to my program is working (obviously you deal with some pain, but not to the extent you incur more significant damage). Be cautious, joint damage can/will fuck you up for the long-haul.

Later,

Hey 1911, which tendon is inflammed? Supraspinatus or biceps, most likely. Let me know and I'll give you some advice to pass onto the PTs; I hate it when PTs don't fix the problems, makes us all look bad. Peace!

Biceps tendon. Doc report: "...Examination of the right shoulder reveals tenderness in the anterior head of the biceps tendon at the insertion of the shoulder. Definate clicking when extending/rotating arm within normal range of motion."

By the way, I don't want to "clutter" the board with my problem. Don't go out of your way, but if you want to forward any info use [email protected]. Thank you for the offer.

Later,

You take weight off the bar and eventually you have to take more weight off the bar, that's only a temporary answer. I played with mine too for a few years. Different doctors, naprosim, ultrasound, electrotherapy and PT but eventually I had to let them go in and scope. I haven't had a problem since. 7-8 years now.

i've recently experienced shoulder pain as well. since some exercises aggravate my shoulder LESS than others, i do those exercises first (when i'm not tired) and able to go heavy. for example, i experience no pain when doing tricep extensions. i do this exercise first and go as heavy as possible. my last exercise on tricep day is close grip barbell presses (even though this is a tricep exercise, i do experience pain in my shoulder). since thats my last exercise, i'm already tired, i'm unable to use heavy weights at that point, & hence the low weight does not aggravate my shoulder as much. just try to experiment with what exercises hurt, & which exercises do not.

seems like alot of us have injury problems. right now my right knee is pretty bad. it hurts like a bitch to squat but i try to fight the pain. i rehabed with a PT for about 5 months with absolutely ZERO progress. they keep telling me its not a tear and just tendonitis, i don't think i believe them. its just frustrating getting surgery at this point when i rehabed for so long though, and considering i just began to get full strength back from a recent arm surgery. oh well, i know alot of us have these problems. i have had it bad but i'm sure there are plenty who have had it as bad or worse. just gotta take it day to day and fight it.

I really appreciate your guys responses. I am going to see if I can work around this crap until my quarter of school is out, and if it is still bothering me (school is out the week of/after Thanksgiving) I will have it checked out. I'll keep you guys posted about my progress in a few weeks. Again, thanks for your comments.
