The most common question associated with protein is "how much can I eat at once." Well there are many opinions on the subject. I feel it's different for everyone. When you start getting bad gas (protein farts) you've probably consumed too much. I used to get that with 45-50 grams of protein- now it takes around 60-80 before I get that. If you can consume 60 grams without getting gas- increase the intake- try to find the perfect amount where you can consume it and not get gas. That's a good measuring stick of just how much you really can consume without having some of it wasted.

If you get gas all the time this doesnt apply to you

Just one man's opinion.

Interesting theory.

Although some people become gassy easily and others not. Still a good 'ball park' estimate.

Scientific research still shows around 40g, so that is where most people should aim at.

Who really eats more than 50g at one sitting anyway? That would probably be overeating (and being unhealthy).

PS- I know a 250+ weightlifter can eat that much and be healthy but I can count those guys on one hand so they are not worth considering.

pretty cool measure there. Of course the "protein farts" should not be confused with the "creatine farts".

Know your farts!

Gas production is not an indicator of protein utilization, but an indicator of microbial metabolism. Your food choices affect the populations of bacteria in your gut, and the increase in protein increases the populations of anaerobes, which produce stinky byproducts. This has no link with how much you are absorbing.

I think the amount of protein you can assimilate at one sitting differs greatly from person to person depending on size. Also, you can condition yourself by gradually increasing the amount. This 30-40 grams per sitting is BULLSHIT I promise you.

I disagree 2Thick. When you say most people, most people are not taking steroids. Myself, I consume 80grams per meal. Postworkout 100 or more grams of protein. I believe protein has more to do with the individual as to how much can be consumed.

I totally agree ~Goku~, this all depends on what and when you take the protein. A postworkout meal will be able to handle more protein than any other meal. Also, The type of protein is important in assesing the rate at which your body will be able to break down these macronutrients. In other words, 100 grams of whey protein is a lot easier to assimilate than 100 grams of chicken or beef. Also, because beef and chicken, etc. will take longer to be absorbed/broken down, the meal(s) after these proteins will also be affected with a slower absorption rate. Also, fats and fiber will also play important rolls. Do I think your body can assimilate these high amounts of beef and Chicken? Yes, it will just take longer. How much can you take per serving? I do not know, but I am able to digest around 120 grams of whey as a postworkout meal with no problem.

Good points, Goku and BMJ I agree I have seen tremendous differences in my body since I upped protein I shoot for 60gms per sitting and 80 post WO.
So I know for a fact I am digesting the extra protein plus I use insulin with all meals so this may help.It should.

I couldn't agree with you more Mr. H, I believe your body will tell you (gas) when you have consumed too much. I believe you can build up your consumption (grams) of protein as your body adjusts (as you have mentioned going from 45-50 grams to 60-80).

I not sure, but we all evovled from cavemen. (some more evolved than others) Do you think that our ancestors stopped at 40, 50, 80, or even 100 grams at a sitting? They ate to live not knowing where their next meal was coming from or when. I am not saying that we should gorge ourselves to the point of unhealthiness, but is it not possible that our evolution has not gone so far from the caveman. If this is true, then the common ideals for protein intake made by doctors (who know less than most on this board)are way to low. Just my thoughts.
