is triac a baby in the world of thyroids compared to the king t3... or is it a decent replacement?

Triac is really not worth the time. Triac (tiratricol) is a T4 precursor, not T3. Therefore the body is required to take the compound in two steps: metabolize it to T4, then let the natural flow of things happen. The body attempts to maintain a constant T4:T3 ratio of about 10:1. Adding tiratricol theoretically increases the amount of T4 in the body, upsetting the balance. For the body to compensate, it converts the extra T4 to T3. The increase of T3 in the body increases metabolism and body heat, therefore burning fat. Before I knew about the mechanism, I tried it and it did nothing for me. I can see why now with all the steps required by the body to make it effective. Stick with T3 (intelligently!) and you'll have better results.
