Punch, for overall mass, barbell rows would be the best, but for isolating each half of the back I believe that d.b.'s offer a more peak contraction. I would suggest switching between these two essential back thickness developers every couple of weeks.

THANKS FOR THE INPUT BRAS! I WORK OUT AT HOME AND HAVE A VERY EXTENSIVE GYM WITH ALL COMMERCIAL EQUIPMENT. THE PROBLEM IS MY DUMBELLS ONLY GO TO THE 100'S. RIGHT NOW IM GETTING 15 REPS ON DUMBELL ROWS AND THATS TO MUCH. SHOULD I PREEXHAUST WITH WIEGHTED PULLUPS?

AS ARNOLD SAID

Buy some heavier dumbbell's.Barbell rows will destroy your lower back.Possibly put you out of commission for good.Besides, when you do heavy barbell rows, most people will have loose form and cheat the weights up anyway,so you're not really isolating the proper muscles. If you are going to do barbell rows,Find a tall bench and lay flat on the bench face down. You can't cheat now, plus you're not using momentum to get the weights up Deadlifting and squatting will add enough freaky overall mass to your back musculature.

I usually tell clients to use dumbbells for every lift they can. It depends on your goals though. If you are into powerlifting, then barbell away. If you are looking for modest strength gains and muscle mass, use dumbells. Why? Using a barbell fixes the wrists in a single plane. This means that your wrists cannot move to their best position, in terms of strength or stability. This can result in all sorts of problems lumped under the category of "f***ed up wrists" (and yes that is a medical term).
Dumbbells allow greater range of motion, require greater activation of stabilizing muscles to control the weights in 3 planes, and don't mess up your wrists (or elbows, or shoulders, but that's another story) as bad. If you are a powerlifter, train with a bar because that's what you'll be using. Otherwise, consider what I've said above. Hope it helps bros. Peace!

I agree with Dr. Atlas on just about everything he says (he's a great addition to the Board), but not on this one. I personally much prefer rows with a bar though, like the Dr., I use bells for practically every other lift.

I use an EZcurl bar for 70degree rows (or bent rows or whatever you want to call them). With a bar, you can flare your arms out and get much better lower lat involvement than you can with bells, IMO.

I also think Big Hurt is all wrong on this. Believe me, bros, I've had a bad lower back since before most of you were born, and 70degree rows with a bar never hurt me. Try an EZcurl bar, Punch, and see if you like it.

Be well and lift heavy, brothers.

If you are like me and want to be a mountain...then I would suggest the barbell rows, then worry about the dumbells after the barbell. Do the heavy stuff first.

Also, with a bar, one can use more weight therefore stimulating more muscle fibers. If I only wanted lats, then I would only do simple back movements. I want a hugely thick back so I do barbell rows and deadlifts. Dumbells always hurt MY wrists more thatn Bars, but that is just me.

Wrap your hands around a piece of cold steel and give it all ya got!!!!!!

I like both but for mass have found BB to be the best. I get a sore lower back too and sometimes can't manage them at 90 degrees so I'll do 70 but they still work best for me. I find with 1 arm DB it is too easy to cheat by twisting the body as you pull the weight upwards. When both hands are used together this is impossible. As an experiment to prove this; if you get a chance, go on a seated hammer row machine with independant sides. Try doing the same amount of work in a set pulling both arms together and then with just one at a time. You'll be able to lift much more with just one arm due to this twisting motion of the body. Obviously this is not isolating the area which you want to hit.

Strengthmonster is perfectly right, and this tendency to cheat with onearm rows is exactly the problem I've found with them. Look around your gym. It's practically impossible to find anyone doing onearms with good form. I know one Russian guy who does them flawlessly, but I just stick with a bar, especially an ezcurl, and avoid the hassle of poor form.
