Something embarrassing happened to yours truly yesterday. I'll post it here as a warning. I was doing bench presses with 80# dumbells, really concentrating on big sets with long, slow negatives. One of the trainers, the only one on duty, was spotting me. My last rep on my last set, I let the bells down nice and slow, got them down to maybe a bit below chest level, and then just had to let 'em drop, a fall of maybe a foot and a half Seemed that the bells bounced end-on at a bit of an angle. Don't know exactly how it happened, but one of them just kind of collapsed, the plates on one end curling under, the axis cracked most of the way through. The trainer lugged it into the office, a pretty annoyed look on his face. I was back in the gym for a second go-around later that day, and my eye kept wandering to that one empty spot on the dumbell rack, where the pair of 80#'s used to be. The trainer had racked the remaining one of the pair in case someone wanted to use it for bent over rows or something, but I felt pretty shitty about the missing one. No doubt the blow I delivered to it was just the last one of many, and the gym is part of my university so I don't need to reimburse anybody or anything, but I hate to think how all this weekend, maybe all next week, some guy is going to be looking for the 80's for a set of declines or something, and he's going to be shit out of luck because I broke one. So, just be aware to let the bells down gently, don't dump 'em on the floor as I did. Or, as the Sarge used to say on Hill Street Blues, "Be careful out there!" Screw that,I'm always told don't be so loud in the gym. I'm like ok asshole you squat 550lbs without making any noise and then i will shut up. I agree don't ABUSE the equipment but if your trying to pound through a set, and you let the dumbells drop(which i always do,my gym has a matted floor in the dumbell area)Then let them drop. If they break then guess what they will have to get another one,Where do you think all those gym dues go to........ ------------------

Hey bro, I use dumbells alot to keep my shoulders from hurting. So I use some weight, like 120's for shoulders. I used to let them down easy and hurt my elbow getting them down. Ive also hurt my pec lowering the bells from the incline bench. So fuck that Ill hurt the weights rather than me! Besides all that noise is fun ------------------

Guy was working out doing dumbbell presses when the weights fell off one side right on his face. Everyone drops them and it is only a weld that holds them on. Metal fatigues under stress. Might want to give the weights a shake before you use them to make sure the weld is not going to fail while you are using them.

I have dropped the 100lb dumbells on myself a couple of times. Even with a spot, on incline dumbell bench press, when I am forcing out my last rep, my arms will give in and I drop the dumbell on my upper chest and shoulders. Just bruises, no serious injury. ------------------

I agree. I like the noise of the 105's smashing into the ground and scarring the shit out of all the hoho eating slobs! Besides theres no way Im going to try to control it when I'm on my last forced rep, I just let those things give way and make sure they don't land on me! -Gord

Matted black rubber floors, guess what we do at my gym. We drop everything. OOOOOOO YA. Drop sets, no problem just fling off the 45lb plates. Dumbell presses with 140's, no problem take them to failure then drop those fuckers to the floor. ------------------

I have to fix the dumbells in my gym at least once a week. They get loose and the screw wobbles and the moment they fall...snap. Don't sweat it bro. That's what we trainers get paid to do when we are doing nothing...which is most the time during this time of year. But yeah...please don't drop them from 4 feet up people. And please don't bounce them through the mirrors. ------------------ "Faster, faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death."

Why the hell do you guys throw the weights??? I have done 115lbs on the incline dumbells and never let them fall. What is in your heads? Marbles? Come on don't tell me you think it's ok to drop a 100+ lbs weight from 2-3 feet in the air. We also have rubber mats everywhere in my gym but man we don't throw the weights unless absolutly necessary. If it's because you are going to get hurt then go ahead and drop the weight no prob. But most of the time you can flipped them and drop them from about 6inches instead of 2-3 feet. Anyway when you drop a heavy dumbell from up high doenst it roll around and hit others in the gym??? Those are bad gym manners guys. Be nice guys ------------------

This is a good point, and I'm suprised by some of the responses. As a weight room supervisor in college, replacing or having to service dumbells was the biggest pain in the ass. And they always deteriorated because some kid (or man) always felt the need to demonstrate his insecurities by INTENTIONALLY slamming the dumbells to the floor after his heaviest set. As if to say "EVERYONE LOOK AT ME!!! I'M BIG AND STRONG TOO...LET ME JUSTIFY IT BY MAKING ALL KINDS OF NOISE!!! AND IF YOU DON'T LOOK, I'M GOING TO CRY OR POUT!!!" If you feel the need to make noise, go to the fucking monkey house at the zoo. And pick me up some bananas on your way out. I've done my share of 500+ deadlifts back when I weighed 160....over 3 times my bodyweight...and I never felt the need to make all kinds of noise. I remember one time I was working in with this guy on T-bar rows. He probably outweighed me by 60 lbs. Him and his training partner felt the need to put on a show by one screaming and yelling, and the other telling him "C-mon! Push!" at a level that everyone can hear. Everyone at the gym stared at these two idiots. After they finished their set, I quietly added 90 lbs to what he was doing and quietly performed my set with only a slight tap as the T-bar hit the stop at chest level. Ohhhh...the drama of it all! So as it was stated in the thread, respect the dumbells. If you break them, not only is your gym membership going to go up, but you are going to lose out on training time when you can't do your set due to lacking one dumbell.

Drexx and BChemist: Thanks for your posts. I was feeling a bit nerdy after awhile here, thinking I was the only guy concerned about all the iron flying around the gym. DLGG: Another intelligent comment. Keep 'em coming, bro. Bjaarki

I will second Bchemist, Drexx, and Bjaarki. Wait till that 100-120lb. dumbell hits the mat awkwardly and flattens your foot & nike's into the next 2 shoes sizes.

quote: I have to agree with the guys thats saying becareful with the DBs, BJ had an accident and that happens, I've had it happen to me at a gym before, I'm sure everyone has....... but when you drop a weight 3 feet for the "attention" of being able to lift 100 lb DBs for inclines, a line has to be drown. there is an obvious difference between letting the weights go...and 'slamming' them to the ground....i let them go when i feel like they'll hurt my joints while finishing sets...GUIDING them to the floor, WITH my hands still on them ------------------ |
