Does taking antibiotics effect the gains of AS when taken together?

Yes, it will negatively effect your gains. Let me see if I can find a commentary David Polumbo gave on this very issue. ------------------

I got prescribed some last week as I developed a swelling at the bottom of my spine, due to falling asleep awquardly on a very long car journey. I didn't see my usual doctor as he was away but told the doc about my as programme. He told me they'd be OK but I was a bit doubtful as I'd heard that antibiotics can counteract the gear. After speaking to a very knowledgeable friend of mine he pulled out some medical books and found that this drug was penecillin based. He told me that yes it could counteract the gear whuch I was on. He recommended some other antibiotics which do not interfere with the anabolic process, so there are some which don't. Unfortunately I couldn't get these without a script so tried some Ibuprofen instead as he advised, with the thought that if it didn't clear up the swelling that I'd have to use the antibiotic as a last resort. The swelling has reduced dramatically without the antibiotics although it is not fully better yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The reason antibiotics effectively reduce the effectiveness of gear is that they tend to impede protein synthesis. In the case of broad spectrum antibiotics(such as penicillin), they impede the growth of tissue from protein, therefore stopping certain diseases. This obviously affects steroid induced anabolism. Nowadays you can get specific tissue antibiotics, which I don't believe interfere with the amino acid-protein creation pathways.

Hey Fonz, do you happen to know the names of any of these and their basic usages so that I can quote them next time I have to visit the doctor and don't get prescribed things that will interfere with the anabolic process?

I had a bad caugh last january while on a deca/winnie cycle. It would't go away so I went to the doc and he gave me some antibiotics. Not knowing if any bad reactions would occur, I called the health emergancy hotline (I think it's called YUK) and told them that I was on anabolic steroids and I was going to start taking antibiotics. They told me "no...nothing bad at all could happen". But as far as hindering gains, I did not ask them about that. ------------------ "It's like mind over matter. If you don't mind... They don't hinder gaines at all. I've been taking penecillin on and off for years for acne. I don't gain anymore when I'm off the antibiotics then when I'm on them. Might I also add that my doses of antibiotics are on average very high. More research needs to be done. -Gord

I was at week 3 of a sut/d-bol cycle when i developed a salivary stone and had to take a strong anit-biotic(cipro). I don't beleive it affected my gains. I was on from week 3 to week 6 and during that times i got about 15lbs. I dont think it affected me... I didn't get any great gains after i finshed the anit-b but i just think it was a coincedence

I had a sinus infection on my last cycle and took Tequin. It didn't seem to hinder me any. My infection got better though!

Antibiotics will not hinder gains to any appreciable extent. The antibiotic that is known for causing a negative nitrogen balance is tetracycline. Although it is fairly specific for bacterial ribosomal subunits (RS's), there is some amount of cross-reactivity with human RS's. Even though it can cause negative nitrogen retention, it is not significant enough to counter the effects of anabolics. Aspirin causes a negative nitrogen balance, yet no one shrivels away on an ECA stack. Another poster stated that the penicillins inhibit protein synthesis. Penicillins DO NOT inhibit ribosomal protein translation, like the tetracyclines, but they inhibit cell wall synthesis in bacteria. Penicillins are not known to affect nitrogen balance. Another little tidbit is that antibiotics are used in the agricultural industry to improve growth of animals. Aureomycin is added to feed to improve feed efficiency. By eliminating alot of the intestinal flora, the animal can absorb more nutrients.

What type of tissue infection do you have strengthmonster?

By the way cockdezl that was an excellent explanation on the antibiotics inhibition of anabolism.

Don't know exactly what type of infection it was. Doctors in the UK don't really tell you that much due to the fact that we have a free health service they just wanna get you in and out as fast as possible to see the next patient. It's not like they get paid by the hour and take their time with you. Anyway I've been taking it easy (except last night - it was legs and I went a bit crazy on squats) and it really seems to be getting better. I'm still taking Ibuprofen but if it flares up again I'm not as worried about taking the anti-biotics now. Thanks bros. |
