I think I may have injured my rotator cuff... I've never injured my shoulder before, it hurts like hell during certain movements especiall taking off a t-shirt.

Does anyone have experience w/shoulder injuries???

Does it sound like my rotator cuff??

Should I see a doctor??

What exercises should I do/not do??

What is the general course of treatment for this type of injury??

BTW I've taken five days off from any upper body training and it's starting to feel better.

Its starting to feel better that you take some time off, think of that as a sign. Benching heavy is hell on the cuffs. Use that type of exercise sparingly.

Hmmm. Is there pain or spasm in your upper traps around your shoulder blade, or in the supraspinatus or infraspinatus muscles on the shoulder blade? Have somebody raise your arm, to the side, then let you lower it back down to your side. Can you lower it controlled and without pain? Raise your arm to your your side at about a 60 degree angle to your body, then rotate your arm as though your were emptying a can of beer. Does this cause pain? Write back and I'll give you my medical almost-professional opinion. Good luck. Peace!

The pain is mostly in left shoulder and upper left traps even up the lesft side of my neck, hurts when I shrug shoulder but not when I pour the can of beer.

i've injured my rotator cuff too. Be very carefull. what you describe is the cuff for sure. dont bench for a couple of months at least ( i still don't and it was 7 months ago). FORGET PRESS BEHIND NECK FOR LIFE if you did it. Rest your upper body for at least 2 weeks, than try to train your chest with a chest machine, partial reps and then a wider range as time goes on. start immiediatly doing cuff exercises as l-fly, very light weights and increase. Do only a dumbell press for your shoulders, a parallel grip may help a lot. Stick to that exercise for life ( it is a good one) and don't even think about press behind neck. Don't do flies for your pecs, peckdeck or any movement behind your neck(pulldowns, chins). If you feel ok after 2 months try to bench again starting with light weight and see what happesn but if you feel anything wrong stop immeadialty and go back to the chest machine. Dont get me wrong, after the first 2 weeks of rest you'll be able to train good with the movements i told you, but dont try shortcuts.

PT, future DO. The negative empty-can test makes me think that it isn't supraspinatus, the most commonly injured rotator cuff muscle. What was the mechanism of injury? Was is sudden or gradual onset? How about the painful arc test, lowering your arm from overhead to your side? Peace!
