less reps, more weight.....thats what works for me....instead of doing 4 sets of 20, i do 4 sets of like 10 with heavier weight..

If I told you it was genetic you wouldn't believe me. Calves like abs can be trained EVERY DAY. If you want to make them bigger just work on them more often.

I train all other bodyparts with few sets and low reps except calves. Mine have noticibly grown in the past month using two exercises, 3 sets per with higher reps (15-20). The trick is I only rest 10-15 seconds between sets. Try this once a week, it really blasts them.

I don't really see how calves or even abs can be trained everyday. I did calves 2 days ago and they're still sore as hell.

Same with a good ab session. Should be sore for a few days...

i never understood why people train calves with high reps you do that all day long with walking. i say hit them hard use heavy weight low reps. also pgf2 works great.

This has always worked for me guys, so here is my pattern i go by:

Seated Calf raises: 3 sets of 12
Standing Calf: 3 sets of 12
Donkey Calf: 3 sets of 12

Some days i knock the reps down for a more intense workout cause i will use heavier weight. Do my calves twice a week. That is the order i do them in also. Use some heavy weight, and they will grow. Mine arent huge, but I have 17" arms, and 17" calves, so i must be doing something right. I try to keep everything proportional, which is pretty hard to do.

hi,

i have nasty calves, but after much experimentation, they are getting big.

heres what has finally worked for me.

do 100 reps, non stop. only taking 5 -10 seconds when you cant do anymore, then keep plugging away. 100 reps should take about 7 minutes total if you are going all the way up and down. do this everyotherday, and watch your calves grow!!!

I am going to try Pops suggestion myself. But not being blessed with genetic calves myself, what has worked for me is a combination of low reps (heavy) and high reps (little or no weight). I train 3 sets heavy first of both standing and seated, then I do 3 sets of high reps (30-50) of both these excercises. This seems to stimulate all the fibers in my calves and they have grown over time. Just remember, that calves take longer than most other muscles to grow, so be consistent and have patience. Also, I wouldn't train calves again until they've stop being sore.
Happy training.

Isn't that dangerous? Shooting MCT oil, I mean.

My legs are pretty big so they make my calves look smaller. I have average calves, but I noticed an increase in size with this routine. I do four sets of MAYBE 8-10 reps, tops. I grab two 75 lb dumbells or so and use the back of an incline bench or something for calf raises. Whatever my calves feel comfortable on. I hold the contraction for about 10 seconds. It BURNS!!!

I think this method is good because you're working all those stablizer muscles. Good for growth. Also, change your routine often...I might try that 100 rep set.

I think HardCore4Ever has it about right. You can train calves (and abs and traps) more than other muscles, but not everyday, like Ulter does. That's overdoing it. Twice, maybe up to three days per week. Heavy weight, both seated and standing raises. Just be patient, and they'll grow. I've got bird legs myself, but have made some progress on a program very like HardCore4Ever's.

You might also look in Strength Shoes (also called plyometric shoes). I use them on leg day sometimes, and get a pretty good burn with them. Don't buy 'em retail, though. Look on eBay, and take your time.

Whoa... I need to pay more attention to what happens on threads I post on.
Bjaarki, I did not advocate training them every day. I said they can be trained every day and several weight training gurus including Arthur Jones have written extensively about it. I train calves twice and abs three times/week.

Calves by far are the most genetic body part I can think of. You can always improve but if you genetically have no calves you will most likely never have great diamond shapes later. Mine are improving but I don't think they will ever be as big as i want. Damned if I won't keep trying though.

I agree training calves twice a week. I train them at the beginning of the week doing seated, and later in the weeks doing standing(sometimes I alternate the standing with leg press calf-raises). I find that doing heavy weight to where I can only get about 6-8 reps for about 3sets and then do a drop set at the end to blast them works great for me. I find using heavy weight is where the growth is at!!!

To warpt62, no my calves and arms are 17" flexed. They are pretty much, exactly the same in size, give or take a few mm's. haha! Bjaarki, yeah, i mean calves shouldnt be the lagging bodypart if you train them with enough intensity, and have the proper regimine to go by. Guys, do seated, standing, then donkey. Honestly, that is all you really need. I like Samiam's version where you stand on the back of an incline while holding a dumbell in your hand, and doing raises. That gives you a different pump, even different then regular standing raises on a machine. Just try those different ones out, hit them hard every time you work them, and dont skimp! Most of the time, people tend to put the calves at the end of their workout, and they try and "leave" on them! Dont! Hit them twice a week and eat right and take the right shit, and you should have no problem.

I used to do standing calf raises till failure about 3 sets with heavy weight. At the time they would burn like hell, but the next day they wouldn't really be all that sore. I started using the seated calf machine doing reps of 15. I would start at about 120 lbs. and go down 20 lbs. every set until I got to 40 then I would burn out. I do just one set of this and the next day my calves are sore as hell. I think the key is not to bounce the weight or see how fast you can do them, but to go down really deep and slow flexin them

I think calves are very ugly. VERY. Forget training them. I train everything above my calves. Seriously, don't you think calves are ugly? It makes your legs just look stupid. There is no muscle on your shins and it just looks like big lumps, if you have big ones.

Upjohn, you make no sense at all. Are you crazy bro? Calves are the most sought after muscle besides chest! People want thick calves! Nobody wants a huge upperbody and some skinny ass calves man. I hate seeing people in the gym who are huge up top and they walk around like they are badasses when their calves look like a 12 year olds. Next time stop and think before you say something stupid like that bro. People will flame your ass for it.

I inject into calves, use a 25 gauge 1 inch pin. MCT is safe as long as you sterilize it, and no it doesn't really hurt more than injecting any other bodypart.

i found the sickest calf workout in some mag on a standing calf raise machine take a weight that you can do about 30 reps with
Your entire calf workout is one set
Do as many reps as you can, stand down
As soon as the burning subsides continue to failure again, Repeat this process until you hit a hundred reps.
i did this a few times
the only problem is you won't be able to walk the rest of the week

I do...but I figure that they are still growing and will probably be big someday. I figure it probably stems from the fact that I used to tip their mothers all the time for fun. I've been feeding them constantly but they are still skinny. At this rate they won't produce much milk when they grow up. Wait a minute...you are talking about baby cows aren't you?

I am one of those guys who does calves and abs everyday. one heavy day on one light high rep day next.
Calves Heavy Day,
1) Seated 4 sets 10 reps
2) Standing 4 sets 10 reps
3) Leg Press Machine 4 sets 10 reps
Light Day
1) Standing 3 sets 60 reps (20 feet straight, 20 toes out, 20 toes in)
2) Standing w/ only body weight for 4 sets of 50.
Good Luck and it will work, your calves unlike other body parts will grow and not get sore as you build up their stamina. Mine are 19" and still growing. Did I mention they started at about 17 1/2. So this works.
