I think youre confused bro, but I think youre refering to acidosis. You could theoretically use baking soda to reduce blood acidity during ketogenic diets...

it won't reduce catabolism, but it does have it's uses. it is used to buffer lactic acid buildup, and allows you to train longer with less lactic acid build up. it is used by runners and things of that nature. baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, and the amount needed to give you an effective dose will give you FAR more sodium than you want to ingest, so it can't be used regularly really.

BEFORE YOU POSTLESS NEWBIES TRY TO FLAME AN OLD TIMER, THIS IS SOMETHING I READ IN AN OLD MUSCLE MAG ISSUE WITH GREG ZULAK. AND HE SAID SOMETHING ABOUT BAKING SODA RELIEVING PAIN AFTER A WORKOUT. JUST BECAUSE IT SOUNDS SILLY TO A FEW NEWBIES DOES NOT MEAN IT IS NOT POSSIBLE.

Well, just goes to show that you can learn something new everyday. Never heard about these uses of NaHCo3. Thanks, d1734, Psycho, and JS.

What kind of doses we talking here, say to increase endurance and reduce soreness? Post some guidelines, brothers.

this is all coming from the book "Optimum Sports Nutrition", i'm gonna summarize.

in a study that used 300 mg/kg baking soda or placebo, performance improved by 2.9 seconds over 800 meters. in the book Colgan says, "that's the diff between first and also ran."

in another study of 200 mg/kg baking soda, subjects did five 1 min sprints. baking soda group improved time to exhaustion on last sprint by 42%.

in the end, Colgan recommends 300 mg/kg and for short, almost maximal exercise (2-6 mins).

The only thing baking soda has to do with bodybuilding is for carb cravings. If you rub or brush it on your teeth while carb depleeting it will help keep your sugar monster a bay.

300 mg/kg. That would be 27 grams, or almost an ounce, for a guy my size. Jeezus, man, that's a hell of a lot of baking soda. How often, and over how long a period, should you do this.

Keep the info coming, bros.

BTW, thanks for the extra "info," Monster!

in the book he just says "save it for the big one" basically. meaning just do it for a major competition, cuz otherwise you will be taking in very unhealthy amounts of sodium.

d1734 is right about the baking soda, now you must get yourself used to ingesting that much, or you'll definetly have cramps and stomach aches the day of competition if you don't.

I use potassium cytrate 1 tbsn a day(28gms)
it workes very well.
Animal swears that it is better than baking soda.
I have never use BS so I can't second that
but he is right on with the other info he has given me.He also races bikes so he would have 1st hand knowledge on experimentation.

Sodium bicarbonate may help increase performance by acting as a buffering agent.Neutralizing acid byproducts of exercise.Another possible mechanism of action that may result in strench increases after sodium-bicarbonate loading is that s.b. induces a higher pH level and increase calcium-ion binding to troponin(a chemical involved in muscular contraction)Effective dose is 135mg/lb of body weight,But can cause stomach discomfort and gastric disturbances.I suggest experimenting with 20mg/lb and gradually increases the dose.
Good Luck Bro.
