Damn...
started week 4 of my sust cycle today and was hoping to get a monster work out. However i failed early on my working sets and it pissed me off. Still as long as i train to failure i'm still okay right???? Thinking of dumping flat benches and inclines( barbell ) and doing just dumbbell work. Just frustrated any ideas guys???

Check your diet. I know when I don't get enough carbs during the day, I feel weak in the gym.

I hear ya bro, Chest is the workout I look forward to the most and when it doesn't go good off the start I get pissed.

But then I remind myself that getting down and letting it ruin my workout will not accomplish anything. So I refocus and get the best workout I can for that day.

We all have good and bad days bro, it's what you make of them that counts.

Hacker has a good point about the carbs. Additionally, make sure you get lots of water, and good rest at night. Don't psyche yourself out too much, sometimes the body is on, and sometimes it is off. I would recommend that you do light, medium and heavy days. Light days would be straight sets of 10. Meduim days will see sets in the 5-7 rep range, and of course, heavy days will be triples. Going heavy for me all the time is hard on the mind and the body, so I alternate on a 3 week rotation. Also consider that a heavy chest day following the day after a heavy legs day will be negatively impacted.

Change it up, keep it different, keep the body guessing, and you will see results!

I also have chest today, and will tear it up. You need to not only have enough carbs, but enough sleep as well. If I do not have both I am dragging ass. Remember also, that attitude is just as important as nutrition and drugs, so think positive and go get 'em.

Don't be offended if you do this already and you think it's too elementary, but change your routine entirely. I don't do the same routine for more than three weeks in a row.

I think Hacker hit it on the head with the carbs. I know from mine and my partner's past experiences, carbs help. No carbs=no energy.

It sounds like you are stuck in a rut with barbells. I would definately switch over to dumbells for the next three or four workouts. Also definately do strict dips, focussing on the chest (elbows out). Use explosive strength in the positive portion (push the dumbells with all your strength, not just enough to get them up) of your reps, and controlled and somewhat slow on the negative part. This is what I do and it shocks the hell out of the muscle.

Gonnabehuge:

Your idea to dump the barbell work in favor of dumbells is exactly right. Buster agrees, and so do I.

Try forgetting for awhile that they ever invented the olympic bar. All you've got is bells to work with. But you have to be smart about this.

First, get yourself an excellent, extremely strong spotter with tremendous upper arm strength (your spotter has to have great biceps when you're training with bells). You're gonna marry this guy for the next few weeks. Now, on chest day, focus very intently on form, go as low and as slow as you can, I mean really low bottoms to the rep. Do really slow, assisted negatives on your last rep in every set, and mix up your bench sets from flat, to incline, to decline. Just stay away from bars and machines for a few weeks, and do some chest workouts with 20 plus sets of strict dumbell work like I've outlined. Stay in the gym for an hour and a half, and be shit scared at the beginning of every set that these bells are just too damned heavy, you're gonna drop 'em right on your face. Your spotter will help you.

Email me offline if that doesn't work, but I bet it will. I've seen lots of guys get past really shitty situations with that kind of breakout. It'll work for you.
