To not re-live my exercise phys. days...Ketosis is when the body is forced to fat as the main source of energy to function. It is derived only when you muscle glycogen levels have hit rock bottom and there is no other carb soruce to raise you blood suger levels. Otherwise, your body has 3 choices for energy and your taking some of them away to force it to choose what you want...fat! If you get ride of carb intake and glycogen levels deplete then you have only 2 other choices for energy to function...protein or fat. Protein is a poor choice for the body as it take a 2-3 more steps to convert it to glucose for use as energy. Therefore, the body will choose the easiest form available to survive and that is to use fat stores in the body. Ketosis is the result of huge amounts of fat being used as energy and giving off the bi-product ketones. This is usually seen in diabetics.

It is derived only when you muscle glycogen levels have hit rock bottom and there is no other carb soruce to raise you blood suger levels.

Depletion of muscle glycogen is not necessary to acheive ketosis. Only depletion of liver glycogen. Depletion of muscle glycogen is only necessary for glycogen supercompensation.

I agree AM, but even so, amino acids in the blood comes into play before the degradation of muscle.
