I just got my MRI results back, and it shows I have a L4/L5 disk herniation which is impinging on the left L5 nerve root, thus causing pain in my hip area and calf. Being that Im only 27 and I have this problem, sucks!! I cant work out the way I want to, and its pain all day long. Anyone who has any information on this injury (best treatment, recovery time, best exercises) would be greatly appreciated. And whatever you do, dont round out your back on the leg press with heavy weight, thats what did it to me, and now Im paying for it. Thanks

I had a herniated disc L-5 in 1993 which affected my right side nerves all the way down the leg and foot.
If I were you I would see an orthopedic doctor, which will either put you on treatment or refer you to an neurosurgeon. I had neuro surgery which was called a discectomy, which the surgeon makes a small incision in your back, uses micro-sugical instruments to remove the ruptured part of the disc. Just put a piece of crab meat between your 2 fingers, now pull it out ,that's basically what it looks like on video. The ruptured part is sticking out of your disc pushing your nerve against bone or spine, that's what causes non stop pain and the tingling down the leg. I was off 6-weeks from work, came back on light duty for a month then he released me on full duty. I'm a lineman by trade, 43yrs, still squat and deadlift. but not to extremes! I was lifting weights when I had the injury in 1993, did not warmup on the squat rack on a saturday and boom, I knew right away something was wrong. I didn't have surgery for 2-months later and it was the longest 2-months of pain, I don't ever want that again. I didn't lift weights for 3-yrs after surgery, got fat and lethargic. So got back into it in late1996. And in all honesty my back has never felt better!
I know I'm rambling here but one word of advice, don't let this slide, your back will get worse, you'll be in constant pain, and you will get what doctors call drop foot, you will lose your nerves and feel for your leg and foot, so when you walk your foot will just drop. No I don't have that, but If I didn't have surgery I would have. Take care, see a doctor. Discectomy is one of the easiest surgerys a surgeon can do, a quote from my doctor.

I must correct myself, I had a ruptured disc where matter actually blew out of the disc.
Do you just have herniated disc just bulging to the side? If so, you probably won't need surgery, but therapy does work with chiropracticers, therapy centers etc. that adjust you and use a pool for excercises to get the weight off of your spine. Your orthopedic doctor should refer some sort of therapy.
Just like any injury you have to back off to heal. If you don't have your lower back, you have nothing in any of the lifts.
Take care.

well Jocko pretty much told my sory to. Almost the exact same thing, ruptured a disc squatting, waited 2 months for surgury, was in the hospital for 5 days, surgury took 6 hours because there was complications, the disc medium got tangeled around my spine. I was out of work for almost 4 months. didnt work out for about 8 more months, so I missed a year in all. SURGURY WAS THE BEST THING TO HAPPEN TO ME!!!!! Apparently I had ruptured this disc before, ad it kept re-rupturing over and over again. Today, 2 years later I feel great, and have squatted as high as 650lbs pain free. BTW, the doc cleared me to lift heavy again, he told me mechanically my back is now better than it ever was so I feel safe. Have it looked at by an Orthopedic though, thats the best advice so you know what your facing.

you can get your doctor if he will,,,,, treat you with a couple of injections. i will have to look back at my notes to see what medicine it was but it worked. he can do an injection in the site of the bulge. herniated, prolapse, bulged, they all have the same meaning. (pain) my doctor does not believe in surgery only unless you need it. he believes in treatment by medicine first. i have a prolapse at L4 L5 S1 area. i have been treated 2 or 3 times for improper deadlifting form. i have never been under the knife and i hope not to. be careful, some doctors will want to cut before they want to treat with medicine. that surgery pays alot more than a couple of injections. you can't blame the dude, thats how he makes his living.
good luck.

My best friend has a herniated disk C4. It killed the nerve that contracts his left pec and left tricep. He waited too long to get an MRI and now his pec is nearly nonexistent and tricep is half the normal size.

He got two MRI's by two different doctors and they both concured he must have surgery. They will remove part of the disk to take pressure off the nerve and he has a 60 percent chance of a 100 percent recovery. He should be off only about one month.

I suggest getting a second opinion too. Another guy at the gym had the same problem and elected to not have surgery and got an alternative medicine and therapy. He's 100 percent now. Sorry, don't know anymore details. Research. Sorry for you situation but hang in there bro.

Thanks for the replys, i appreciate it. What the MRI report says exactly is, "Partial degeneration of the L4-5 intervertabral disks with central and left lateral recess disk herniation impingining upon the left L5 nerve root sheath". It doesnt sound very good, but hopefully I can get it better. Im seeing a chiropractor who used to be a bodybuilder and owns the gym Im at, so he knows his stuff. Im doing traction right now, and just started doing some lower back exercises, gonna try and stay away from the surgery. It just kills me to see all these idiots in the gym doing everything wrong and stay injury free, and I actually know what Im doing and I end up with a bad back injury. REALLY SUCKS!!

I feel for you bud. I had evulsion at 3 levels. Iwas off work 16 months. (Thank god for insurance)Went to physio 150 plus times chiro 150 plus times. Saw a neurosurgeon, orthopedic surgeon and had a triple discogram and a myleogram. After all that the ortho says I could take out all 3 discs and fuse your back together. In the next breath he says" but I wouldnt do that if I were you at your age"So back to physio and chiro. You have to let it take as much time as it takes or you will fuck yourself permanently.Im back to training about 85-90 percent and thats probably as good as it will be BUT at least Im healthy again.TAKE YOUR TIME AND HEAL THEN COME BACK AND GO HARD.GOOD LUCK BROTHER.
